These remains of regularly cut holes are probably dating from Ptolemaic and Roman times when copper and iron tools were used, hundreds of year after the unfinished obelisk was abandoned. Karnak Fallen Obelisk EG074980jhp Egyptian Hatshepsut Amun embrace Horus Granite Fallen Obelisk Karnak carved is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake and this is what is shown in this photograph. The obelisks were of red Aswan granite and the standing one is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Both encased buy a room covering them in done by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower sections remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. Luckily this has been largely untouched and most of the carvings including Queen Hatshepsut are pristine as illustrated by this section with her and Amun in an embrace watched by the falcon God Horus in high quality carvings into this exceptionally hard stone. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel obtaining its water from a deep well and near it the area is covered with broken drinking pots. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. There is a distant view eastwards of the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. No longer used for public access to opposite bank but still an attractive single arch of 70 foot height illustrating the building skills of earlier times. It is situated between the Lonach Gathering park, near Candacraig and Bellabeg with its historic Motte and the entrances to Lost and Glenbuchat in the heart of Upper Donside. St Mary s Auchindour Kirk WTN1861JHP St Mary's Church Scotland Tombstones Shadows Trees Grass Moss Cemetery Aberdeenshire is situated by the Cabrach road and reached by taking first left turning after Lumsden on road to Rhynie and Huntly in North East Aberdeenshire near Morayshire. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with this fine Scottish medieval door and has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. Next to it is spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees.
