The journey through the back streets, military zones and industrial sites was fascinating enough but even the taxi driver had to ask twice for directions. It was eventually not that far from a so-called sculpture park that I had ‘discovered’ the previous year on the same search but failed to find the colossus. There are other quarries and two in the Southern Quarry area of which Tlaina has this unfinished colossus, another statue is at Shallal Quarry while another has an unfinished sarcophagus. It is thought that a fracture in the shoulder of this statue of Ramses 11 might be why it was abandoned and further down the hill an unfinished square base has also been found as well as evidence of a ramp or track way that was being prepared for its transportation when completed. The famous unfinished obelisk is the most interesting because of its sheer scale, if completed it would have been one of the largest ever cut out but it gives an idea of the techniques used to extract these monsters. Around the area are the remains of other stone quarrying showing how holes were cut in the rock in a series of runs that allowed fractures to occur and for the blocks of pink granite to be removed. Diorite, a very hard mineral stone was used as hammer balls to pound the granite and on either side of this obelisk can be seen deep gullies or channels with bowled floors showing the depth penetrated. This obelisk is thought to have been abandoned when a fracture occurred at the very far end. Edfu Interior Visitors EG0229JHP Edfu Temple Egypt Interior Tourists Dwarfed Columns Hypostyle Hall Photo in this large and almost intact building with visitors for a sense of the scale is located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx
Egyptian Plants InfR EG02049jhp Egypt holiday hotel Movenpick Giza cactus plants infra red film grounds taken at this very pleasant hotel Jolie Ville near Giza and the Pyramids to the north of Cairo. It used to be a long run through the centre of Cairo after landing usually around midnight and no great fun to eventually get to bed around 2am to rise again for the first day’s excursion usually starting at 8am. Today a circular road around Cairo means much shorter transfer times but if you can manage to go out a day earlier and have a first day with sleep in time and a relaxing start to what can be a very hectic schedule. It is easy to take a taxi from the hotel to the Pyramids and have a leisurely look by oneself prior to doing the more concentrated guided package trips. The hotel is on one level and set in well established gardens and with a cool feel to the atmosphere surrounding the secluded rooms. These photographs show the type of arrangement there is of paths all leading to the swimming pool, some pool side restaurants and the main reception dining room area. There is some limited shop facilities and a bank. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins. Luxor Karnak First Forecourt EG074843jhp Karnak Temple Tourists guided Egyptian Hypostyle Hall Taharqa sunshine autumn the impressive view after entering the main western pylon of this famous site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This is a typical scene in the first court after entering through the main entrance of the first pylon with the remains of the pillared kiosk of Taharqa in a single papyrus column and the large block of alabaster, possible a barque station. Beyond is the second pylon with its decorated front and the beginning of the famous hypostyle hall leading to the distant obelisks and inner sanctuary. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. The tomb shafts adjacent to the entrance road our well constructed with smooth well finished walls and could have been for royal women rather as in Lisht and I understood from my guide that many items found were displayed in the small musuem at Karanis which has been closed since I visited it 1994. Nearby are several other pyramids of which the North or Red Pyramid also of Sneferu [Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty c2613-2494BC] is the older, largest and most intact. When I visited the site in 1995, the same year the military allowed tourist visits, the north entrance, there are two, was reached by climbing up the outside of the structure assisted by the helpful guide but I was unable to reach the burial chamber as I did not trust the rope ladder available. Nearby are several other pyramids of which the North or Red Pyramid also of Sneferu [Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty c2613-2494BC] is the older, largest and most intact. The others of much poorer quality are from the Middle Kingdom 12th Dynasty some 600 years later. Abu Ghurab & Guide EG02AA01jhp Egyptian Abu Ghurab Sun Temple local custodian guide plantation desert isolated location south of Giza, about 25km from Cairo and situated on the desert escarpment after travelling through rural roads and walking in agricultural land and then the sand. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

One enjoyable tradition is the afternoon tea and cakes provided free of charge as part of the Nile Cruise experience with its origins from Victorian days. After a busy day maybe visiting temples or a hot day relaxing on deck watching the busy daily rural life along the River Nile, the evening sunset can be a quiet peaceful time in an otherwise hectic itinerary. I was only on the Atlas once and although small and compact with a real sense of age it was an enjoyable cruise and felt more intimate than I imagine those huge glass and marble multi storey cruiseboats are, Sadly these days I hear that many are rusting away at anchor because of the dire downturn in the tourist numbers as happened after the 1997 terrorist attacks in Luxor. Khenu Mastaba Carvings EG02AA80jhp Saqqara Egyptian mastaba Khenu Exterior column hieroglyphics carvings reliefs sunny is located by the causeway and near Pyramid of Unas on the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and associated with what was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC. There are several other mastabas near the causeway and behind this small one is a large one dedicated to the Queen’s of Unas Khenut and Nebet. Khenu was the son of Nefer, the Inspector of artisans and singers. I could find little information about Khenu and in several reference books/guide books his mastaba is not mentioned. I understand he had two sons called Ihy and Simoenas, one of which appears in the carvings and his mastaba has an excellent example of a false door. There are several cartouches for the King Unas indicating that Khenu and his father served during this period. Saqqara Tomb Entrance EG051147jhp Saqqara buried tomb door lintel carved entrance hieroglyphs ancient Egyptian is alongside the restored walkway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits. Advised by my custodian guide this was the Tomb of Nefer-mery but I can find no reference to it in any books or the Internet but I have had it confirmed that this is probably correct based on the hieroglyphics on the tomb entrance. Saqqara Tomb of Nefermerry 6885EG07JHP Tomb Nefermerry Rock Cut Bedrock Near Causeway Unas Saqqara Egypt and the mastaba tomb at the gate. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser is visible from here and this is just another example of many such artefacts to see on this huge sprawling necropolis to the south of Cairo. The causeway has been substantially restored and has several fascinating carved reliefs of ancient Egyptian fish from the Nile and other animals that existed at the time. Advised by my custodian guide this was the Tomb of Nefermerry but I have been unable to find any support for this in guide or reference books and the only Google result is my own site - scary.
