Photos in this gallery are of Edfu Temple, one of the best preserved in Egypt, and usually the first first visit after leaving Luxor ona Nile Cruise.
Edfu Temple EG203627jhp Edfu Temple town center street calache horse carriage ride tourist transport to Edfu Temple located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. Edfu is one of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. In 200 the normal tourist entrance was from the north and you walked alongside the side of the temple wall and then round to enter the temple proper by the main pylon gate on the south face. However these days the tourist approach is from a new centre situated to the south and walking up to the temple is as was intended after its construction so that the immense pylon dominates as you arrive at the temple. Some cruise companies now use coaches as there have been complaints about the care of the horses that has upset visitors and I know on one occasion the driver of the carriage tried to make it race others to get to the temple first-our group warned him no baksheesh and he returned to a walking pace. It is located in the western desert south of Cairo and is accessed by 4x4 from Faiyum and is often part of a desert trip including Qasr al-Saghah Temple. In this photo a group of archaeologists are inspecting the causeway on what was once thought to have been an island in the lake. Looking from the Sanctuary acrooss the Central court to the Memorial Festival Temple or Hall of Thutmosis 111 this large open space in which the most notable thing is the huge slab of alabaster on which a shrine might have stood in the oldest part of the Karnak complex. Tanis Tomb Family Relief 1316EG05jhp Tanis Ancient Egyptian Delta Egypt Royal tomb Osorkon family group located at Royal Necropolis at Tanis once thought to be the capital created by Ramses but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Philae Temple EG204531jhp Philae Temple courtyard vistors tourists groups busy Ancient Egyptian Isis pylon columns carvings Gods Aswan island was established late in the history of Egypt being mainly Ptolemaic, eventually closing as a religious site around 550AD and being located on an island had remained remarkably untouched, partly as it was submerged when the Nile flooded after the construction of the first dam. Being relocated onto the Island of Agilkia on the River Nile near Aswan, to save it being flooded permanently after the completion of the High Dam, it is perhaps one of the loveliest and most complete classic Egyptian temples to visit with a peaceful spirituality lacking in many of the land based sites mainly because of being isolated on an island from modern day noise and often being less crowded as less accessible. It also has a very delightful Light and Sound show, partly a walk through to the Sanctuary followed by a sit down session just past the Kiosk of Trajan. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

These clouds were taken at the Dinnet Glider strip layby were a morning but they changed very quickly for when I first spotted them they were far more like a large question mark but when I got to the layby, the first safe pull off place in about 5 mins they had moved and compacted quite significantly. Part of the old adage, always have your camera handy, as capturing those unusual natural events can be a matter of minutes. Jousting Display Castle Fraser SO5229JHP Castle Fraser Jousting Action Colours Knights Horses Lances Scottish Summer re-enactment is one of the many events held around National Trust of Scotland Castles in the summer season put on by various societies and groups recreating the UK's past rich history. Castle Fraser is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 16 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. Any of my photographs are for scenic/tourist use only and cannot be used for product endorsement without the explicit permission of the NTS. Please contact their Edinburgh Head Office at Wemyss House, 28 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, EH2 4ET. This building dates from between 1575 and 1636 is the “most elaborate z-plan castle” in existence in Scotland today and was the work of two master masons or builders called Bell and Leiper. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside.
