Aswan Nile Cruise EG949334jhp Aswan Egypt cruiseboat deck swimming pool RA11 Eastmar Promenade Nile in southern Egypt with an array of restaurants, berths for cruiseboats and ferry landing points for trips on the river to hotels, Elephantine Island and Museum, Kitchener Botanical Gardens and trips in feluccas to the Nubian Villages or Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. This view is taken from the main top deck of the Eastmar RA11 which was the Egyptian end of the Kuoni package tours which at that time had a berth near the city centre. It was my first trip to Egypt in September 1994 and we had left Edfu after spending nearly a whole morning berthed after the temple trip because of gale force winds and rain storms and the journey south to Kom Ombo was decidedly uncomfortable at times. Arriving in Aswan to blue skies and glorious sunshine was a huge relief and sitting by the pool swept all those grey feelings away. This photo was taken towards the end of the afternoon so hence it tends to be against the sun which sets over the West Bank. It can be a quiet time to visit the temple because most the main package tours have finished but also there is a lovely quality to the evening light casting a gentle golden glow over the limestone. Cloud Creep Torphins xcv8831jhp Summer Scottish clouds Torphins hill creeping shrouded eerie low cloud Deeside over the Learney and Hill of Fare behind Torphins, Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland about 25 miles west of Aberdeen. This often happens during the year and is an eerie sight as the cloud creeps over the hill and moves down into the valley below and is very similar to watching a sea mist or haar creep in from the sea and move inland, something the North East Coast is prone to in the summer months. It is not unusual for Aberdeen to be shrouded in haar all day while a few miles westwards, Deeside is basking in glorious summer sunshine. Their shapes, size and often awesome sense of power make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East. This year there has been several colourful displays in December, the particular photo was taken on the morning of the 28th at around 08.47. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges. It is accessible by a public track after a steep climb from a signed layby and passes a farm house and outbuildings. This was the year after it was opened to the public after restoration and safety work has been carried and there was still some scaffolding standing on the south boundary wall. These photos were taken on the 20th September, 2008 on which a cloudy start turned into some glorious sunshine, blue skies and interesting clouds so made the walk up worthwhile. Auchindoun Castle vs2331jhp Auchindoun Castle ruin prominent hilltop Dufftown Morayshire Scotland autumn walk fence fort with excellent views over Glen and the River Fiddich is located on a possible earlier Iron Age earthwork, built in the mid-1400’s as an traditional L-shaped tower house was the centre of many clan feuds and much violence, burnt, restored and abandoned by 1725 now remains an eye catching Historic Scotland property on the Cabrach to Dufftown road, NJ 349 375. It is accessible by a public track after a steep climb from a signed layby and passes a farm house and outbuildings. This was the year after it was opened to the public after restoration and safety work has been carried and there was still some scaffolding standing on the south boundary wall. These photos were taken on the 20th September, 2008 on which a cloudy start turned into some glorious sunshine, blue skies and interesting clouds so made the walk up worthwhile. The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen. This viewpoint is by the Platties, which used to be beneath the railway line near the station but is now below a small park adjacent to the cemetery. On the western horizon is the Hill of Scolty with its distinctive memorial tower.
