Aswan Nubian Museum Lamp EG052977JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Islamic Glass lamp in Mameluk style with enamelled naskhi test giving the Emir Qusun and his title from the Ottaman period and a specular example of the ancient craftmanship on show in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

One enjoyable tradition is the afternoon tea and cakes provided free of charge as part of the Nile Cruise experience with its origins from Victorian days. After a busy day maybe visiting temples or a hot day relaxing on deck watching the busy daily rural life along the River Nile, the evening sunset can be a quiet peaceful time in an otherwise hectic itinerary. I was only on the Atlas once and although small and compact with a real sense of age it was an enjoyable cruise and felt more intimate than I imagine those huge glass and marble multi storey cruiseboats are, Sadly these days I hear that many are rusting away at anchor because of the dire downturn in the tourist numbers as happened after the 1997 terrorist attacks in Luxor. It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors. Banchory Approach zxc0830jhp Banchory Dee Street Bellfield spring trees Kincardineshire Royal Deeside Scotland view taken from the south after crossing the River Dee Bridge and approaching the main town of this first and largest Deeside town some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It is situated to the north of the River Dee. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town with easily accessible forest walks and a not too strenuous walk to its summits with pleasing views of much of Royal Deeside as well as interesting views to the north and south. In this view is the distinctive period house, now complex, of the Bellfield Nursing Home with a Chinese Restaurant under the glass canopy in the foreground by the main carpark exit and in the background the vibrant tree cover of the Captain's Wood. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on. Banff is a town with a history dating back to the 12th century and was granted a charter by Robert the Bruce in the 14th Century. Once a thriving herring fishing port it is now a quiet town catering more to tourism with its excellent golf course, marina and has several sandy beaches. It is reckoned to be one of the driest and sunniest locations is Scotland. To the east over the River is the sister fishing town of MacDuff, which remains a busy fishing harbour supporting its own trawler fleet with fishmarket and its excellent facilities expanding for the watersport and pleasure sailing industry.
