Abu Simbel Stele EG051364JHP Abu Simbel Stele Exhibit Rock Frieze Hieroglyphics Entrance Walk Photo, saved from various sites, some lost to Lake Nasser, and now set into Great Temple artificial hill which houses the huge rock carved statues of Ramses 11 and his wife and daughters at what was once a River Nile site. Now the temple has been reconstructed in a mammoth UNESCO rescue project in the 1960’s and housed in an artificial hill high enough to save it from the total flooding with the creation of Lake Nasser. A photograph like this is no longer possible as there is a total ban in all such tombs in Egypt although these were taken when it was permitted but tripods were not allowed and in the very poor light the best quality is not always achievable and very strong tungsten lighting was used on the internal white plastered walls giving a colour caste beyond the camera at the time to balance. Probably covered as late as the Napoleonic exploration means the sun and exposure to the elements has not had long enough to destroy the colours completely something that will eventually happen. Tut Gilded Shrine EG11719JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit Tut canopic vase Golden shrine stucco uraeus freize from Tutankhamun tomb in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Tell Basta Cobra Frieze EG077103JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple cobra frieze granite carving ancient Egyptian site Delta is a large complex near the town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well.
