This photo was taken at 22.58.52hrsUT for 20secs showing fading red and ray activity from a fragmented green arc towards the west. I took 4 frames over 4mins, before the display faded away using my Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my earliest digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and for this display, sandwiched between 27th July and 28th October and again I took no slide film. At 1600 ISO the noise factor was not a problem and the general look of the images were better than the corresponding slide film with 400asa stock pushed two stops to give an equivalent sensitivity level of 1600asa. This photo was taken at 00.37hrsUT for 19secs showing faint multiple ray activity with the yellow green oxygen gas in a breaking arc and the constellation Ursa Major, The Plough or Big Dipper. I took 20 frames between 00.19hrs and 01.13.32hrsUT, using my Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These photos show that Aurora displays can be viewed during summer months in North East Scotland and even with full moonlight. Palermo Stone EG11826JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit fragment Palermo Stone Kings List flood dates such as the largest piece of the basalt historical stele is in that musuem in Italy and is tantalising source is earliest Egyptian history. In the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Ptolemaic Painted Detail EG051859JHP Deir al-Madinah Egypt Temple Interior Painted Frieze Fragment Blue Red Carved is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Photos of the recently opened Temple of Merneptah site on West Bank at Luxor with coloured reliefs, open air museum exhibits and interior carvings and paintings.

It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Alexandria Granite Carving eg9613727jhp Egypt Alexandria broken fragment carved granite freize high status fine quality Rhakote hill modern Mediterranean coastal city no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaohic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one is located on Rhakote Hill one of the earliest sites in the City with some Roman ruins and archaeology. On the hill is the dominant granite column called Pompey’s Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian around 297BC but associated with the later rival of Caesar when it was held, mistakenly, his head was placed on top of the column. Also of interest are some granite Sphinxes and underground burial vaults. It is also thought to have held some of the contents of the ancient Library after its sacking after the fall of the House of Ptolemy but nothing now remains of this smaller library probably sacked during the Fifth Century AD by Christian zealots. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Heliopolis Open Air Museum EG077064JHP Heliopolis Ancient Egyptian Senusert Obelisk Museum Coffins site entrance north of Cairo is the oldest standing obelisk in Egypt at the site of the temple of Re-Atum although little is left of this once important sun cult centre and dating from around 1970BC at the beginning of the 12th Dynasty. Not visited usually as part of most tour packages it is an interesting visit enroute for other interesting Delta sites such as Tel Basta and Tanis. Access to Senusret’s pyramid is through a local village and agricultural land at the edge of the desert escarpment as is common with most of the pyramid sites south of Giza. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh. Amenemhet’s construction was found to contain fragments and blocks from Saqqara and Giza pyramids and complexes thought to have been incorporated for spiritual reasons rather than stealing them. Situated near a canal, an offshoot of the Nile it is possible that construction material was transported by water. Little is left of his mortuary temple and the valley temple accessed by a causeway is under ground water level. Mastaba’s and 22 tomb shafts for the royal harem were found on the west side. This photo is of one of these shafts-apologies for the exposure on the foreground but one of the problems of slide film in the field, however the important part the construction of the shaft is shown clearly. Situated near a canal, an offshoot of the Nile it is possible that construction material was transported by water. Little is left of his mortuary temple and the valley temple accessed by a causeway is under ground water level. Mastaba’s and 22 tomb shafts for the royal harem were found on the west side. Hawara Pyramid Archaeology 6396EG07JHP Hawara Pyramid North East Aspect Scattered Archaeology Statue Broken Sand Carved lie isolated in the desert sand adjacent to the area called the Necropolis, a collection of tombs and temples of nobles associated with royalty. The site is near Faiyum, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems.
