Forres Springtime wtn2138jhp Forres Moray Scottish Spring Mosset Burn Crimea obelisk Thomson daffodils commemorating the work of a Scottish Doctor who died at the Battle of Alma in 1854. The obelisk is made of Peterhead Granite and stands 50 foot high and is surrounded in the springtime with pink and white cherry blossom. In the summer the town, this ancient Royal Burgh with a charter dating back to 1496 and perhaps even earlier is adorned with a famous park of hedge sculptures and extensive floral displays in its sunken garden making this a popular place for visitors. The town dating to ancient times lies to the east of the River Findhorn and the Burn of Mosset also offers an additional water feature. It alos has the Nelson Tower the first monument in Britain celebrating Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. To the east of the town is the stone cross-slab obelisk called the Sueno Stone, recording the victory of the Picts over the Danes in 1014AD. Tradition claims is was the site claimed by Shakespeare in his play Macbeth where the King of the same name met the three Witches. It is identified on Ordnance Survey maps as Macbeth’s Hillock. Nearby Brodie Castle which lies between Forres and Nairn in Morayshire Scottish Highlands is home of the Brodie family, the castle perhaps dates back as far as 1160 and came under attack from Montrose’s army but survived. Many additions were made subsequently and the collections of various items are extensive and of high quality. This became a National Trust for Scotland property in 1980 and is situated about 4.5 miles west of Forres and the grounds are open to the public all the year round. It stands 23 feet high, the tallest such medieval sculpture in Scotland and the 7.6 ton sandstone slab is decorated with warriors, war scenes, the vanquished corpses, animals and Celtic interlaced spiral knotwork. It has been covered in this huge Perspex canopy to stop the weathering that is caused by modern acid rain.
