Autumn Beech tree Corse Neil road Craigievar Aberdeenshire Mar district is near the National Trust for Scotland Castle property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round.
Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.

The effect although not accurate or truth does increase the sense of height and scale.

Knock Castle tower house Ballater Deeside Scotland Aberdeenshire larch fort ruin summer sunny is a Historic Scotland property to the south of town on Royal Deeside on the Balmoral Estate at Knock Farm accessed from the South Deeside Road. It has a sad history of family feuds between Gordon of Knock, the builder of the present tower, who dropped down dead on hearing the news that his family was killed in one day at the hands of the ‘Black’ Forbes of Strath Girnock. He in turn was later killed by Gordon of Abergeldie who inherited the castle but let it fell into disrepair.

Poldullie Bridge River Don Upper Donside Strathdon Aberdeenshire Scotland summer historic 1715 construction by John Forbes of Invereran which withstood the 1829 flood and crosses the River Don at the Pooldhulie Pot, a small narrow curve or crook in the river. No longer used for public access to opposite bank but still an attractive single arch of 70 foot height illustrating the building skills of earlier times. It is situated between the Lonach Gathering park, near Candacraig and Bellabeg with its historic Motte and the entrances to Lost and Glenbuchat in the heart of Upper Donside.

Tolquhon Scottish Castle Tarves Buchan ruined stone walls front gate is a Historic Scotland managed property and is entered via the ticket office, located in the Buchan area of Aberdeenshire near the village of Tarves. It is ruined but still shows the elegance of the Renaissance Laird of the mid 15th century. The original Preston Tower dating to 1420 was surrounded by new build by the Forbes’s in the late 16 Century and the new style is seen in the elaborate gatehouse and other interior living quarters.

In the distance is the distinctive outline of Bennachie, a hill near Inverurie on the River Don in North east Scotland on the top of which are the ruins of a vitrified Pictish Fort.

River Don Scotland Castle Forbes summer road bridge view Donside Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland looking downstream where the river passes below Castle Forbes which can be seen up on top of the hill to the lefthand side or upstream westwards in the general direction of Keig and towards Strathdon and the Bridge of Alford. Although this is the summer of the long summer heat and sunshine the North East of Scotland was lucky to get some rain, unlike England, but the river is low and there are signs of river algae and the riverside reeds seem to have grown more. The road from Whitehouse crosses the River Don near keig at the junction for the Auchleven to Insch Road. Nearby is a righthand turn which follows the River Don passing the Cothiemuir Natural Burial Cemetery by way of the Lord's Throat and Paradise Woods to the Kemnay Monymusk road.
