Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

This digital photo was taken at 23.25.32hrsUT for 13secs, showing green and red oxygen rays forming the classic corona zenith or crown above the cottage roof looking southwards the colour chnage indicating the strength of the display increasing. This was a short exposure 13 as against 20 secs and very faint CCd structure lines are visible and indication of an under exposure. This was the last of the digital photos taken. The cf131 digital sequence, starting at 22.58.22, shows the continuing activity following on from the very active night of the 29th/30th with another Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 23.25.32 which was frustrated by complete cloud cover and rain. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 21.50hrsUT on the evening of the 30th when the extensive cloud cover cleared. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 21.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my first digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. Aurora Corona Forming aucf13101jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish Cassiopeia Pleiades East green red rays Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the evening of the 30th at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the south. This first digital photo was taken at 22.58.22hrsUT for 20secs, showing green and red oxygen rays and the start of another corona strength display looking eastwards. The cf131 digital sequence, starting at 22.58.22, shows the continuing activity following on from the very active night of the 29th/30th with another Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 23.25 which was frustrated by complete cloud cover and rain. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 21.50hrsUT on the evening of the 30th when the extensive cloud cover cleared. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 21.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my first digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. It is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry , accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including such as an Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel, the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent large addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] temple for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Coull Slack Fork 1916311jhp Tillylodge Slack Coull fork junction panorama Lochnagar mountain Deeside Scotland Aberdeenshire just above the viewpoint at the Deeside Field Club marker pointing out the alignment of all the hills visible from the viewpoint is on the road out of Tarland heading north and ultimately takes you east to Aberdeen in North east Scotland. The central outline is of the mountain called Lochnagar, fourth highest in Britain and the distinct hill on the right is that of Morven. Claimed as a favourite viewpoint of Royal Deeside for Queen Victoria and hence it being called the Queens View. In the centre of this photograph is the hill with the Bronze Age Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle built on it. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Hallforest Castle 186511JHP Hallforest Castle Scottish Ruin Keep Tower House Kemnay Kintore Aberdeenshire is one of few 14th Century keeps remaining in the North East and tradition is that it was built by Robert the Bruce as a hunting lodge. It was entered on the first floor by a ladder, the four floors for occupation and having embattlements has a degree of fortification. It was given to the Earl of Kintore by his father The Earl Marischal as a reward after the Battle of Bannockburn. It is now just an impressive ruin standing in the middle of a flat field adjacent top the Kintore to Kemnay road. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. Looking over the old ruin by the Spital Burn which once was a ‘Spital’ or Hospital, a hostel for weary travellers either crossing the Cairn drove road or herdsmen moving cattle south to the Lowland Markets. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. Next to the Spital is a small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s.
