Scotland summer sunny forest Cothiemuir Stone Circle recumbent rear view Keig Aberdeenshire and now the focus for a nearby natural burial site with a spiritual connection going back to Bronze Age times. This ancient Recumbent Stone Circle with altar stone, flankers and some outer monoliths is found deep in the forest off the Keig to Monymusk Road via My Lord’s Throat which runs along the southern side of Bennachie. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs.

Visible often from the public footpath and often by the water’s edge watching for small fish in pools by the raging torrents of water that cascade through the rocks beneath the Feugh Bridge near the town of Banchory, 18 miles west of Aberdeen on Royal Deeside. The River Feugh is a tributary of the River Dee.

After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs.

Linn River Dee Gorge footpath walk public Deeside Glen Aberdeenshire Scottisah dramatic dangerous bridge is as far west as the metal road goes in Glen Dee and the Linn is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl or doubling back taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge and as far as the new National Trust for Scotland carpark. Please note that with this photo extra sharpening maybe needed as it was taken with an old prime 24mm lenses which does not have the ideal resolution of the D700 DSLR.
