This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx

Abydos Egyptian Temple infra red B&W ghostlike entrance Sety pylon carvings royal monument limestone, situated at the most important and one of the oldest necropolis sites of ancient Egypt is the home of Osiris and the imposing structure in the photograph is The Temple of Seti/Sety 1 and added to by Ramses 11 particularly the courts and the portico viewed from this spot. There are many important elements to this temple and include an extensive King’s List and the spectacular remains of the Cenotaph to Sety 1, the Osireion.
This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins.

Visits to Abydos are not usually included in standard Nile cruise packages and are usually arranged a private excursions from Luxor usually by road. In addition the trip can be extended to visit the Ptolemaic Dendera Temple near Qena although this temple is often organised as a separate excursion as par of a day Nile cruise from Luxor. If visiting Abydos make extra time for a visit by foot to the nearby small temple of Ramasses 11 which has some of the most wonderfully colourful wall paintings open to daylight so easily photographed.

Abydos Egypt Temple infra red film B&W ghostly Osireion cenotaph Seti blocks white limestone, situated at the most important and one of the oldest necropolis sites of ancient Egypt is the home of Osiris and the imposing structure in the photograph is The Temple of Seti/Sety 1 and added to by Ramses 11 particularly the courts and the portico viewed from this spot. There are many important elements to this temple and include an extensive King’s List and the spectacular remains of the Cenotaph to Sety 1, the Osireion.
The photograph illustrates the Osireion, a cenotaph to Sety, completed by Merenptah but also a symbolic tomb for the God Osiris. This is now open to the air and is partly submerged but still its awesome size can still be appreciated with its megalithic granite blocks similar in appearance to the Valley Temple at Giza.
This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins.

Egyptian Luxor Hotels St George River Winter Palace Nile ferry boat crossing and this was the manner of crossing to the West bank from the cruiseboats and hotels in Luxor proper. The road bridge over the Nile slightly to the south of the town was opened in 1998 and then all journeys to the West Bank sites was done by coach and much less romantic than crossing the Nile by ferry boat. It is still possible to use the public ferry and then get a taxi from the ticket office near Qurna al-Gaddah. In 1994 on my first trip I stayed in the Etap Hotel now the Mercure and it was a great location on the promenade, great views over the River with easy access by foot to the Luxor Museum, to public ferry points for crossing the Nile and to nearby shops or just enjoyed a leisurely walk along the tree lined waterfront by the berthed cruiseboats and feluccas. You could see the Temple of Hatshepsut tucked into the Theban hills, watch the balloons starting their early morning flights or see feluccas and cruiseboats sailing along the Nile. In my first few visits to Egypt but especially my first the Nile cruiseboat the RA 11 anchored adjacent to the main promenade and we were collected in the morning by ferryboats and taken over the river to the East Boat and brought back after our visits to the West Bank sites. Coaches were waiting on the West Bank to take us to the sites.

Egypt Luxor Hotel River Nile View balloons dawn West Bank Hatshepsut looking over the quiet River Nile on a sunny September dawn from one of the riverside balconies of this long standing central Luxor Hotel on the city waterfront. This was my first visit to Luxor and I was lucky to get changed to a room in the north wing which was considerably quieter than one in the centre of the hotel above the swimming pool, various restaurants and a dance floor. It also offered great views to the West Bank and in this case two hot air balloons starting their trips over the West Bank. In 1994 the Hotel was the Etap but is now the Mercure and has a great location on the promenade with easy access by foot to the Luxor Museum, to public ferry points for crossing the Nile and to nearby shops or just enjoyed a leisurely walk along the tree lined waterfront by the berthed cruiseboats and feluccas.

Egypt Luxor Mercure Etap Hotel River Nile View West Bank Hatshepsut looking over the shimmering River Nile on a sunny September afternoon from one of the riverside balconies of this long standing central Luxor Hotel on the city waterfront. This was my first visit to Luxor and I was lucky to get changed to a room in the north wing which was considerably quieter than one in the centre of the hotel above the swimming pool, various restaurants and a dance floor. It also offered great views to the West Bank. Temple Merneptah Outside Exhibit Carved Foot Damaged Toes Limestone Statue of an Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum.

Saqqara Unas deep cut hieroglyphs carving ancient Egyptian netcher flax that can be seen in small chapels near the restored causeway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits.

Forres Moray Scottish Spring Mosset Burn Crimea obelisk Thomson daffodils commemorating the work of a Scottish Doctor who died at the Battle of Alma in 1854. The obelisk is made of Peterhead Granite and stands 50 foot high and is surrounded in the springtime with pink and white cherry blossom. In the summer the town, this ancient Royal Burgh with a charter dating back to 1496 and perhaps even earlier is adorned with a famous park of hedge sculptures and extensive floral displays in its sunken garden making this a popular place for visitors. The town dating to ancient times lies to the east of the River Findhorn and the Burn of Mosset also offers an additional water feature. It alos has the Nelson Tower the first monument in Britain celebrating Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. To the east of the town is the stone cross-slab obelisk called the Sueno Stone, recording the victory of the Picts over the Danes in 1014AD.
