Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Deeside ab941212ajhp Aurora Borealis British arc active purple rays April 1994 Aberdeenshire taken on the evening of the 5th April, 1994 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo taken at 23.25hrsUT having started showing activity from 23.15 and this was that final phase of a five minute burst of activity which continued with faint rays until around 00.15hrsUT on the morning of the 6th April. This was one from possibly 7 nights in a row although on the night of the 6th April the cloud cover was so thick that no Aurora could be seen. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP11 processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Luxor Karnak Temple EG962004jhp Karnak Temple Eighth Pylon Seated Statues south face wire equipment front damaged located on the transverse axis south from the main central area in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is of the Eighth Pylon with its southern face dominated by five colossal figures from Amenhotep 1, the most complete and Amenhotep 11 while the two either side of the doorway are of Tuthmosis 11 and all were later restored by Tuthmosis 111 although all are now in very poor condition. The pylon was originally raised by Hatshepsut but subsequently her identity was removed as was the name of Amun which offended the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten but later restored by Seti 1. The area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. Kom Ombo Cartouche EG052498JHP Egyptian Kom Ombo Ptolemy Five Temple Cartouche Detail Bas Relief Carving on the River Nile just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. Looking up into the ceiling of the Hypostyle Hall, its lintels and the papyriform painted open bell shaped capitals still showing original colour. This ancient Recumbent Stone Circle with altar stone, flankers and some outer monoliths is found deep in the forest off the Keig to Monymusk Road via My Lord’s Throat which runs along the southern side of Bennachie. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. Old Brig Dee Invercauld fgh2962jhp Old Brig River Dee Invercauld Deeside Scotland summer heather stormy clouds is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the summer heather purple and although catching the sunlight the background is dark and stormy. NB This was taken with a non-digital lens and may need extra sharpening. Built in 1628 by John Earl of Mar it was basically a pitched roof over the main tower and some turrets. Later in the 18th century the battlements and unusual star-shaped defensive curtain wall were added. It was forfeited to the crown after the 1715 rebellion and were later sold to the Farquharson’s of Invercauld and rented back to the Crown as a Hanoverian garrison post until 1831. It has a barrel vaulted ceilings, an iron yett, an open wrought iron metal grid, covering an underground dungeon with its bottle neck entrance. Since then it has been a private property until recently by Invercauld Estate and is now run as a tourist attraction by a local community trust after refurbishment with exhibitions reflecting its, and the local area history. As a private property in the control of a local charity then these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Castle will be Open again from 3rd May 2008; interior at weekends from 11-4 or by prior appointment.
