The structure of a corona crown or zenith is forming at the top of this photograph while red oxygen gas coloured rays sweep downwards to the northern horizon filling the whole sky with colour. Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendera Temple EG007129jhp Dendera temple Egypt Tiberian Hall ceiling carvings painted Hathor damaged faces in this beautiful mainly Ptolemaic and Roman structure although the site extends back into the earliest periods of Egyptian existence and it is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion.This photo is of the elaborate ceiling and columns of the Tiberian columned hall which first faces the visitor entering the temple proper. The tops of the columns have Hathor faces vandalised in antiquity, probably when it was filled with sand and seen as pagan for the earlier Christians who often used these temples as churches and were thus easily able to obliterate the faces. What is very wonderful even today is the elaborate nature of the decorations not only on the ceilings but also covering in exquisite details all the sides of the columns and the surrounding walls. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. Dendera Temple EG007122jhp Dendara Dendera temple Qena Nile Egypt roof sacred lake mudbrick walls desert taken from this beautiful mainly Ptolemaic and Roman structure although the site extends back into the earliest periods of Egyptian existence and it is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion.This photo shows the view from the roof of the temple looking south westwards over the Sacred Lake, now filled with palm trees and beyond the mudbrick enclosure or boundary wall. The water here was used for rituals carried out during the Feast of Osiris and nearby is the well from which the water was drawn. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of the sacred lake steps which take one into a deep walled catchment area now dry but filled with palm trees. It would have been used for rituals conducted during the Feast of Osiris. The in fill from many Atenist temples has been removed particularly from the inside of the ninth pylon and much of the area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. This particular photograph was taken in 1998 as part of a Stars and Signs cruise and we were able to access the temple at sunrise before it opened to the main package tour traffic. This allowed photos to be taken in beautiful golden early morning light which was particularly useful in highlighting some of the rich wall reliefs. Luxor Amenhotep & Sobek EG962094JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Inside Exhibit Photograph King Amenhotep Sobek Calcite was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit was found in a water filled shaft at Dahamsha and has been reused by Ramses 11 with his added inscriptions and is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Unas Pyramid Casing EG02AA74jhp Saqqara Pyramid exterior casing limestone Tura rubble fill sloping smooth ruin on the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and which was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC and is a considerable state of disrepair although some of the finer quality Tura limestone casing still remains. The inside is now not accessible but is one of the easiest to enter and entry by Gaston Maspero was financed by Thomas Cook & Co where a highly decorated burial chamber covered in Pyramid Texts was uncovered along with a huge basalt sarcophagus. Migvie Cross Slab jkl9308jhp Migvie Stone Cross-slab Christian symbol carved ancient Scottish relic stands in the kirkyard of Migvie Church and is easily accessible for the casual visitor. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on gneiss stone, 2 metres high, similar to that at Kinord but held to be of inferior quality. The interlaced filled cross appears crudely squeezed into the stone but has interesting circular projections at the top, suggestive of something hanged. There are also iconic symbols carved into the angles of the cross, namely horseshoe, V-rod, double disc, Z-rod and a pair of shears as well as a horse and rider.
