Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

Northern Lights Scotland Cassiopeia headlights Deeside purple rays nitrogen spring March 1990 taken on the road from Feughside Inn to Potarch by the Shooting Greens and the lights at the bottom are car headlights on the North Deeside Road near the Potarch Bridge looking northwards over Suie. This display on the 27th March at 21.30hrs UT and was one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. I took this photo of the Aurora display using the Fuji RHP 35mm slide film rated at 400asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 800asa. They were exposed around 20 seconds as about the best combination with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more saturated.

Scottish Aurora Borealis Finzean road Feughside Deeside purple rays nitrogen winter March 1990 taken on the road from Finzean which is to the west of Banchory on Feughside, following the course of the Water of Feugh on the long straight before Feughside Inn and the turn off to Potarch by the Shooting Greens. This display on the 27th March at 21.15hrs UT and was one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. I took this photo of the Aurora display using the Fuji RHP 35mm slide film rated at 400asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 800asa. Scottish Broom blossom that is common throughout North East Scotland and a sure sign that summer is on its way. This is a view of Feughside from the Shooting Greens Road and looking across to the distinctive tor of Clachnaben; to the left is an early fox glove, another colour readily seen on Deeside.

Mulloch roadside scrub of ferns and wild flowers on hilly land on Royal Deeside with a token rabbit sitting on rock in right quarter. This road is the Mulloch back road to Eslie to the south east of Banchory at the back of Tilquhillie Hill with distant Scolty Hill and the Feugh Valley off to the left.

Esslie Lessler Bronze Age recumbent stone circle sunset Scotland Aberdeenshire Eslie Kincardineshire Scotland is one of such ancient monuments dotted around the North East and this one is located on the southern slopes of Tilquhillie Hill looking south and westwards up Feughside and the distant Clachnaben hill near Banchory on Royal Deeside west of Aberdeen near Mulloch Forest. Nearby is Esslie the Greater a few fields away lower down while to the east are the Nine Staines in the Garrol Wood. Taken using a Bronica ETRSi on 3rd October 1987.

Feughside Corsedardar hill Aberdeernshire Dardanus Scots King broken marker burial is on a popular drive between Finzean and Aboyne following the B976 westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. The broken stone partly repaired with iron bands and cement after workmen broke it is supposed to stand in its original position and across from the modern War Memorial; nearby is a Millennium standing stone. The broken stone is claimed to have marked the place nearby where an early Scottish Pictish King Dardanus was killed circa AD75, according to Hector Boece’s History of the Scots 1527, because of his cruelty and universal dislike. This whole legend is beyond determining as fact. Slightly south west downhill of this and in the forest is a Long Cairn possibly dating to c.4000BC. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day.

Scottish Autumn falls River Feugh Banchory waterfall trees backlit sunny water rocks at famous Royal Deeside falls taken from footbridge near Banchory. A recent upgrade of the public viewing footbridge by the old road bridge has had additional interest by the creation of a wooden sculpture created for the ‘selfies’. The viewing area is very popular for watching the salmon leaping up the falls on their annual migration to the spawning beds in the burns that feed the Water of Feugh especially in the Forest of Birse.

Banchory South Deeside road beech trees autumn colours Inverey fishing gate Kincardineshire is located near the Feugh bridge with its famous salmon leaping falls before you cross over the River Dee into Banchory coming from the south east. This is the largest Deeside town on the River Dee and is some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns.

Heron Ardea cinerea bird sunning riverbank River Feugh Banchory Scotland photo here sunning itself by these very famous falls whose salmon leaping draws many visitors as well as this large British fishing bird. Visible often from the public footpath and often by the water’s edge watching for small fish in pools by the raging torrents of water that cascade through the rocks beneath the Feugh Bridge near the town of Banchory, 18 miles west of Aberdeen on Royal Deeside. The River Feugh is a tributary of the River Dee.
