Corsedardar Finzean 198331jhp Feughside Corsedardar hill Aberdeernshire Dardanus Scots King broken marker burial is on a popular drive between Finzean and Aboyne following the B976 westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. The broken stone partly repaired with iron bands and cement after workmen broke it is supposed to stand in its original position and across from the modern War Memorial; nearby is a Millennium standing stone. The broken stone is claimed to have marked the place nearby where an early Scottish Pictish King Dardanus was killed circa AD75, according to Hector Boece’s History of the Scots 1527, because of his cruelty and universal dislike. This whole legend is beyond determining as fact. Slightly south west downhill of this and in the forest is a Long Cairn possibly dating to c.4000BC. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Lying to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness. Looking across this valley from this point to the ruins of Tullich Kirk one of the oldest Christian Churches on Deeside which is beside the North Deeside Road. Just to the right of centre poking above the trees is the top of an obelisk of Aberdeen granite in memoery of William Farquharson of Monaltrie who died in 1828-erected by his widow. Bearing right from Finzean this road crosses to Aboyne and Deeside via Ballogie. This tree I remember as a child over 50 years ago as being a Henderson my father showed it to the family on our car trips to picnics in the Forest of Birse and of course explained it was nature recognising our surname. Not sure if it was a deliberate act or just natural piece of luck and it is shame to see the right hand tree trunk appears to be dying.
