Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Faint Aurora au9469ajhp Aurora Borealis Scotland winter display faint ray cloud Cassiopeia Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the early morning of 7th March, 1994 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to the north, this particular photo taken at 00.35hrs. This was the best of seven nights in a row of displays during one of the most active phases of the 90’s Solar Cycle although it was on the evening of the 7th that the best display occurred. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP pushed processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Hathor Face eg98545 Dendara Temple entrance open air museum Hathor face carving ancient Egypt, is located north of Luxor survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. The photo is by the main entrance North Propylon gate alonside which is a small open air museum of various artefacts found on site including this carved face of Hathor in its bovine style although in 2007 it no longer resided there. Aswan Souk Fabric Colours EG053097JHP Aswan Egyptian Souk Bazaar silk fabric display many layers colours, located near the promenade, is full of colourful street stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Lake Qarum al-Fayyum eg947034jhp Egypt el-Fayoum Lake Qarun Moeris peaceful quiet lakeshore restaurant was a peaceful coffee stop during hectic visit to The Fayyum [Crocodilopolis Nome] province of Egypt south of Cairo which included visits to Meydum and Hawara pyramids, the waterwheels of Madinat al-Fayyum Town, Lake Qarun and then returning to Cairo via Karanis. Many years later I returned to the Lake and stayed at the historic Auberge Helnan Hotel on its shores before a journey across the desert to Soknopaiou Nesos [Dimyah-al-Siba] and Qasr al-Saghah Temple. The Lake has a long history from Neolithic times but major development started under Amenemhat 1 in the 12th Dynasty with water management and drainage schemes. Very productive area for various crops, wildfowl and fish with increase development during the Ptolemaic and Roman times as it is still to modern days. Two Roman dated temples survive in reasonable state and the southern one is dedicated to the crocodile Gods of Pnepheros and Petesuchos. Many finds have been made especially of life in a residential area with houses scattered throughout the site and there is also a fine Roman bathhouse. A small museum now closed has been replaced with an open air area with a selection of artefacts such as this fallen quern or grinding bowl adjacent to the main walk to the temples. This huge prone lion figure with a human face faces the east to the rising sun and the modern day Cairo and is a very popular destination for the thousands that visit the Giza plateau and here viewed from the most accessible point on causeway from Khafre Pyramid to his Valley Temple. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake and this is what is shown in this photograph. The obelisks were of red Aswan granite and the standing one is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Both encased buy a room covering them in done by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower sections remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. Luckily this has been largely untouched and most of the carvings including Queen Hatshepsut are pristine as illustrated by this section with her and Amun in an embrace watched by the falcon God Horus in high quality carvings into this exceptionally hard stone. Luxor Amenhotep Face EG9620925JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Cachette Interior Amenhotep Face Profile Quartzite Photograph was photographed inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. These particular exhibits are in an annex displaying statues discovered in 1989 in a storage pit and called The Luxor Temple Cachette of which the red quartzite life size statue of Amenhotep 111 is one of the finest pieces of carving yet found in Egypt. This photo was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Hawara Pyramid Falcons 6406EG07JHP Ancient Egyptian Hawara Pyramid Mudbrick North Face Mortuary Chapel Remains located near Faiyum, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Khenu Mastaba False Door EG02AA87jhp Saqqarah Ancient Egyptian mastaba Khenu tomb son Nefer false door is located by the causeway and near Pyramid of Unas on the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and associated with what was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC. There are several other mastabas near the causeway and behind this small one is a large one dedicated to the Queen’s of Unas Khenut and Nebet. Khenu was the son of Nefer, the Inspector of artisans and singers. I could find little information about Khenu and in several reference books/guide books his mastaba is not mentioned. I understand he had two sons called Ihy and Simoenas, one of which appears in the carvings and his mastaba has an excellent example of a false door which is behind this more inferior one. There are several cartouches for the King Unas indicating that Khenu and his father served during this period. Saqqara Museum Coffin Face 6841EG07JHP Saqqara Museum Exhibit Golden Mummy Mask Burial Gold Egyptian Inside this new museum by the modern ticket office at entrance to the Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo. This is the covering for a mummy and in the style of many such Late Period mummified coverings with gold plating or polychrome cartonnage giving it surprising richness. It is difficult to avoid reflections in the glass especially as access to take photographs is restricted, tripods and flash is banned and I understand that since I visited there has been an overall photography ban applied. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on pink granite stone and is probably one of the last carved in Grampian. It is so-called after the daughter of a local landowner who died during her elopement. Note the exif in this image shows 2012-it should be 2013. This view is taken from the road approaching Laurencekirk near Easthills looking across to Strathfinella Hill. The Howe of Mearns is a central part low lying flat fertile farmland in the centre of an area stretching from the south of Stonehaven to the Tay Estuary. Once you head North West over the various Angus Glens or over the Cairn O’Mount from Fettercairn you go into hill farming, moorland or forested estates onto Deeside and eventually reach the Highlands. The Dess burn creates this delightful small waterfall known as the Sloc O'Dess best viewed from the roadside layby but ideal view at water level is inaccessible except to those willing to scramble up a steep rocky gorge side although a recent set of hand rails and some rough steps have made access to the lower viewpoint much easier. A constructed viewpoint on the eastern bank is reached by a long walk from the North Deeside Road. The falls are now near a recently constructed section of the Deeside Way, a walk and cycle track going from Aberdeen to Ballater, loosely following the old Deeside Railway line. Dess Falls Spring zxc0180jhp Dess Burn waterfall spring Deeside Kincardine O’Neil water Aberdeenshire Scottish located by the Dess Road, heading north from the North Deeside Road after leaving Kincardine O’Neil going west towards Aboyne. The Dess burn creates this delightful small waterfall known as the Sloc O'Dess best viewed from the roadside layby but ideal view at water level is inaccessible except to those willing to scramble up a steep rocky gorge side although a recent set of hand rails and some rough steps have made access to the lower viewpoint much easier. A constructed viewpoint on the eastern bank is reached by a long walk from the North Deeside Road. The falls are now near a recently constructed section of the Deeside Way, a walk and cycle track going from Aberdeen to Ballater, loosely following the old Deeside Railway line. Partridge Family xvv1170jhp Partridge red-legged bird Scotland Aberdeenshire chicks family colourful plumage Alectoris rufa standing on a stone wall and showing off its very striking feather patterns from black throat band, red legs and black and white side panels all making it ideal camouflage when running in the undergrowth. This particular bird was brought onto the estate as part of a selection of more interesting birds for the seasonal rough shooting and is not a native of this part of Scotland. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on. An information board is at the entrance of this commercial Forestry Commission forest showing extensive walks and biking routes and is also the site of Whitehills, one of Aberdeenshire’s many recumbent stone circles. These views are to the north of the entrance to the Whitehills Stone Circle parking area near Todlachie Farm. Once you head North West over the various Angus Glens or over the Cairn O’Mount from Fettercairn you go into hill farming, moorland or forested estates onto Deeside and eventually reach the Highlands. Towards the left of this view is Drumtochty Forest and Glen with the charming road that links Auchenblae in the Howe of Mearns with the main B974 Cairn O’Mount road opposite the Clatterin Brig restaurant. This road passes St Palladius Church and Drumtochty Castle in Glen Drumtochty which has interesting Forest Enterprise walks through mixed mature woodland and after leaving the forest the road enters Strathfinella passing this delightful loch near Glensaugh, used for fishing and often visited by ducks and swans. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. It is another enjoyable walk returning to the south of the Lodge and skirting round the top of Loch Muick, returning to the Spital Carpark via the Blackburn. In the summer the riverbank can be mobbed with picnickers and swimmers while it is also a popular salmon fishing stretch and the narrow turbulent water good for canoeing. Huntly Castle Face TO173053JHP Huntly Castle Scottish Aberdeenshire Winter Snow Sunshine Facade Front Tree from road past the River Deveron, the present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the river near its joining the Bogie at the town of Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.
