Aurora over Scotland (8 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Borealis Display rty1926jhp
Aurora Borealis Scottish green arc active rays Aberdeenshire photograph clouds taken on the 1st October 2012 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I have seen this back quarter and probably the best display now photographed since end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens and ISO settings of 3200 which allows for much shorter exposure circa 6 sec average times with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. The light conditions were not perfect as the background light was from the full moon but dispels any myths that Aurora’s cannot be seen under such conditions. Looking westwards with multiple rays coming off an arc at 00.26.27hrs UT [01.26.27BST] with an exposure of 12 secs. This illustrates the problem with cloud making it difficult to see Aurora displays and here several of the rays extend higher than the cloud line.

The tops of the columns have Hathor faces vandalised in antiquity, probably when it was filled with sand and seen as pagan for the earlier Christians who often used these temples as churches and were thus easily able to obliterate the faces. What is very wonderful even today is the elaborate nature of the decorations not only on the ceilings but also covering in exquisite details all the sides of the columns and the surrounding walls. The photograph illustrates the Osireion, a cenotaph to Sety, completed by Merenptah but also a symbolic tomb for the God Osiris. This is now open to the air and is partly submerged but still its awesome size can still be appreciated with its megalithic granite blocks similar in appearance to the Valley Temple at Giza.

Abydos Egyptian infra red film B&W ghost blocks Osireion water open white limestone, situated at the most important and one of the oldest necropolis sites of ancient Egypt is the home of Osiris and the imposing structure in the photograph is The Temple of Seti/Sety 1 and added to by Ramses 11 particularly the courts and the portico viewed from this spot. There are many important elements to this temple and include an extensive King’s List and the spectacular remains of the Cenotaph to Sety 1, the Osireion.
This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins.

Visits to Abydos are not usually included in standard Nile cruise packages and are usually arranged a private excursions from Luxor usually by road. In addition the trip can be extended to visit the Ptolemaic Dendera Temple near Qena although this temple is often organised as a separate excursion as par of a day Nile cruise from Luxor. If visiting Abydos make extra time for a visit by foot to the nearby small temple of Ramasses 11 which has some of the most wonderfully colourful wall paintings open to daylight so easily photographed.

Kildrummy Gardens Den hotel bridge view quarry trees shrubs rocks summer colours Aberdeenshire this attractive park lies’ beneath the ruin of this 13th century castle in western Aberdeenshire. Located in an ancient quarry from which the stone blocks of the construction of Kildrummy Castle, the huge artificial gully known as the Black Den was initially developed as a feature by the Gordon’s where there was a fishing pond, with various trees and shrubs. Later after the building of a bridge to give access to the New Castle built around the 1900’s by Colonel James Ogston, known in Aberdeen as ‘Soapy Ogston’ of the Aberdeen Soap Manufacturing company and with its close connections to two large hotels of to-day in the area-Norwood and Ardoe House, the gardens were further developed with a Japanese Water Garden and the addition of many new shrubs, trees and flowers. Under James Pearson Smith the modern gardens came under a Charitable Trust in 1968, giving public access in exchange for public donations and entry fee to help pay for the continuing running of the gardens. Overlooking the gardens are the ruins of the Castle and the New Castle, now the Kildrummy Castle Hotel. A small carpark is at the entrance to the road that crosses the bridge and access to the Hotel.

The Castle is a Historic Scotland property with its roots set during the peak of medieval European castle construction during the early 13th century. Started by Alexander 11 and possibly later extended after a visit by Edward 1 of England in 1296. It survived many sieges, being burnt and later restored, before being largely dismantled after the Jacobite rising of 1715 when used as the headquarters for the Earl of Mar. It is a magnificent ruin and the scale of the thick walls is particularly impressive despite not being as well preserved as many similar English ruins.

Strathdon Autumn vbn1516jhp
Kildrummy Castle Gardens Den quarry trees autumn winter colours Aberdeenshire this attractive park lies’ beneath the ruin of this 13th century castle in western Aberdeenshire.

Big Moon bnm5845jhp
Scottish super full moon November 2016 closest perigee Torphins Deeside looking from Ord Fundlie to Learney Hill above Torphins Torphins in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland about 25 miles west of Aberdeen. Using a 300 mm zoom lens fully extended on a tripod with a cable release as the exposure time was .4 of a second at f8 with an ISO of 640. This is not what would be deemed astronomical quality but gives the false impression it is bigger than it is as so close to a natural foreground whereas a few hours later it will appear much smaller high in the night sky-infact it is exactly the same size in reality. This was taken the evening after the fullest moon when less cloud let it be visible-the last time this close and as 'big' was 1948. It is all relative to the beholder and certainly other full moons appear much the same-taken as it clears the hill top as gives more nof a sense of scale.

The original station was opened in 1866 and closed 100 years later in 1966 following the Beeching Cuts. The Station was as far as the Deeside Railway extended from Aberdeen and allowed Queen Victoria easier access to Balmoral Castle than previously travelling overland from Edzell. It was later used by HM Queen Elizabeth on her annual holidays at the Castle until the Station was closed when the railway line was disbanded in 1966. Happily the new station will once more be a central part of the tourist experience in the town. The station was opened in 1866 and closed 100 years later in 1966 following the Beeching Cuts.

Unfortunately during the week of 10th May 2015 a fire has all but destroyed the wooden building as can be seen in this photograph, including the Waiting Room Museum, the restaurant area, some small businesses although a replica railway carriage as used by Queen Victoria was saved. The future of the station is uncertain but as a central part of the tourist experience in the town it will be a major loss. Ballater lies to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness.

Blackhall Castle Gates xvv1200jhp
Banchory Blackhall silver granite gates castle fishing lodge Deeside summer is located just before crossing the road bridge over the River Dee into Banchory coming from the south. This large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The gates are all that remains of the castle, demolished after WW2 but now serves as a fishing lodge and entrance to the fishing beat alongside the River Dee on the south bank extending westwards. Although the gates tend to be locked it is not ‘private’ land and should be accessible as a riverside walk in terms of the Land Reform [Scotland] Act 2003.

Dragonfly golden ringed hawker cordulgaster boltonii wings eyes buddleia hanging Deeside Scottish summer photograph taken with a macro lenses as it appears to hang attached to the buddleia flowers possibly asleep or resting. It made no movement when I photographed it and when I blew gently on it remained completely still; I thought it had died and was stuck to the buddleia however after I returned a few minutes later it had disappeared. I checked the ground to see if it had fallen but it was no where to be seen. I had seen a large dragonfly flying the day before around the area although I was unable to get close enough to identify it. The main source of natural water is a small stream and there are some stagnant pools in the nearby forest where deep tyre tracks from tree harvesters had operated a few years before.

Buckie Morayshire summer Moray Scotland North East coast harbour RNLI lifeboat anchored is one of the largest Morayshire towns facing Moray Firth on the northern coast of North East Scotland with small operational fishing harbour, fish market, boat building and featured on the Fishing heritage Trail. Made up of several distinct communities it extends some 3 miles along the coast but is never more than 1 mile inland and as it never actually touches the busy A98 main coast road it remains a quieter than normal town. An earlier small harbour at Buckpool, dating from 1857, but rapidly became outdated and now on longer exists but the more modern Cluny harbour dating from 1880 still operates and is one of the finest on the North East Coast.
