In this photo are a row of ram-headed sphinxes, known as crio-sphinxes, as they take the form of ram with a lion's body straddling a small form of the pharaoh here, Ramses 11 in the form of Osiris, in the avenue from the old harbour entry to the temple with the first pylon in the background. The sphinxes were probably originally constructed by Amenhotep 11 or Horemheb but their identity replaced by Ramses 11 and even later again changed by Pinedjem 1, an evolution possibly spanning some 300 years. The entrance into Karnak is between the two rows of sphinxes but leaving the site you come round the back of the nearest row to the main coachpark. Luxor Temple fm Coachpark EG074825jhp Luxor Temple Egyptian pylon seated statues coachpark ticket office obelisk view located on the east bank of the River Nile at Luxor, Egypt is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues that greet the visitor at the entrance to the first pylon although this view is often when leaving the site as the ticket office and main entrance is on the opposite side by the River Nile promenade. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
River Nile Esna Lock EG052098jhp Egypt Egyptian River Nile Esna lock cruiseboats entering exiting water photos taken on the cruise from Luxor to Aswan and at the Esna Lock there was major congestion owing to only one lock in operation, although an additional one was being constructed. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south. This is one of the most visited places in the world probably and certainly in Egypt is this desolate desert valley beneath the Theban mountain on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor famous for some of the most important Royal burials of this ancient civilisation. It is possible to climb over the hills above the Valley, pass above the huge amphitheatre of Deir el-Bahri above Hatshepsut’s spectacular Mortuary Temple and come down into Deir el-Medina, the workers village using the same paths as they must have done over 3000 years ago. Tomb Ramasses IV EG017119JHP Entrance Corridor Painted People Tomb Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses Valley Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor, the ancient Egyptian capital city of Thebes and is a spectacular example of true majesty with scale, colour and elaborate craftsmanship carved out of solid rock. This was the only opportunity I had of using a tripod, special ticket available in 2001 and I had a roll of tungsten artificial light balanced slide film which allowed long exposures and a decent depth of field. The custodians could not have been more helpful and even cleared areas for me to photograph free of visitors but oh for my D700 DSLR. Banchory Approach zxc0830jhp Banchory Dee Street Bellfield spring trees Kincardineshire Royal Deeside Scotland view taken from the south after crossing the River Dee Bridge and approaching the main town of this first and largest Deeside town some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It is situated to the north of the River Dee. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town with easily accessible forest walks and a not too strenuous walk to its summits with pleasing views of much of Royal Deeside as well as interesting views to the north and south. In this view is the distinctive period house, now complex, of the Bellfield Nursing Home with a Chinese Restaurant under the glass canopy in the foreground by the main carpark exit and in the background the vibrant tree cover of the Captain's Wood. Crathes Castle bnm7848jhp Crathes Castle Gardens west herbaceous lavender purple path summer clouds Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland leading to the Exit or if you turn left you can walk down to the June Border, one of the main attractions of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Entry into the walled garden is at the west side and the main path into the gardens is through the white borders and onto the path down the June Borders to the bottom of the walled garden where there is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border, the summer jewel resplendent with many colourful plants, with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Aviary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
