This village on the West Bank is more of a tourist site as against a much more genuine village on Seheil Island which is only visited usually to see the Rock Carvings. These photos were taken with a compact camera to be less intrusive and I was advised by the tour guide not to use my professional gear. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. This photograph is near the four papyrus bud columns on the outside Festival Hall of Thutmose 111 towards the north eastern corner. The hall was constructed next to one of the oldest areas of Karnak Temple. This is a complex mix of columned hall, chapels, magazines which are not represented in these photos; this area is described as Akhmenu by the ULCA Digital Karnak Archive but not mentioned a such in any other guide books although it does mean festival Hall per se. This area covers, the Hall of Ancestors containing an extensive king’s list, the famous botanical garden suite with plants found on his military campaigns into Palestine, a shrine for the underworld God Sokar and beyond the remains of a stand of beautiful papyrus columns described as the Colonnade of Tuthmosis 111 and other parts such as The Temple of the Hearing Ear, a sort of public area where offerings and prayers could be made to Amun; the inner sanctum being inaccessible to all but the priests and pharaoh. Originally erected by Seti 1 and was completed by his son Ramses 11 and although today greatly lacking in perfection is still overwhelming in its scale. This photo is taken from the outside of the hall on the northern side of the Temple where most of the inscriptions are related to Seti 1 and his various military campaigns in Syria and Palestine and the hall is viewed from the gate on this side. Goddess Hathor EG051866JHP Deir al-Madinah Temple Interior Luxor Egypt Hathor Goddess Face Column Painted is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze since then when this was taken with a Bronica 645. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Glen Tanar which lies to the south of Aboyne on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire North East Scotland. The Glen is now a very regularly visited place with Braeloine Centre with Ranger and Visitors’ Centre, holiday cottages, fishing and easy access to many easy walks through ancient Scottish Caledonian Pine Forest and is the main route to Mount Keen. I photographed the snake on the driveway entrance to the main house sunning itself on the stone chips. Esslemont Castle UP623104JHP Esslemont Castle Scotland Tower House Fort Photo Ellon Aberdeenshire Buchan roadside is a 16th century tower house, viewed from public highway, built on earlier 14th Century site of the Mareschals and then passed to the Cheynes of Straloch through marriage. Was destroyed during feud between the Cheynes and Hays in 1493 and later rebuilt. Later owned by Earls of Errol but lost during Reformation conflicts. Later sold in 1728 to Robert Gordon and abandoned in 1769 in favour of a new Esslemont House built nearby. In a very ruined state and best viewed from the A920 just south of Ellon. Ruins in the photograph are from a 16th century castellated round tower of a large mansion house. Area to NW of these ruins was excavated in 1938 by Douglas Simpson and substantial evidence of a large and strong L shaped tower house with pink dressed granite foundations and is considered to be the remains of original castle. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
