Tuna el-Gebel Stela of Akhenaten 6326EG07JHP Northern Boundary Stele Akhenaten Nefertiti Tuna-el-Gabal Ancient Egyptian Eroded Statue with the king and queen seated in this photo which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen and is passed during a visit to the necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel is City of the Dead with various chapels, temples and catacombs for animal mummies and many more which are still buried and unexcavated under the desert sands. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel obtaining its water from a deep well. The photo is of an enclosure gate possibly Ramasside but unfortunately historical quarrying and reuse of building materials and a higher water table have taken their toll of the site. Tell Basta Weathered Statue EG077116JHP Tell Basta weathered statue damaged temple ancient Egyptian Delta site is a large complex near the town of Zigazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. The entrance on the south side is visible but the high ground water table means it is flooded as are all the lower chamber areas. It is most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains except for a large area of sandy mounds and hollows divided by a canal; new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems it appears unfinished at the time of his death c1797BC. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. Abu Ghurab Eroded Blocks EG02AA13jhp Abu Ghurab Nyuserre Solar Obelisk base limestone blocks erosion soft isolated location south of Giza, about 25km from Cairo and situated on the desert escarpment after travelling through rural roads and walking in agricultural land and then the sand. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Zawyet Pyramid EG051070jhp Zawiyet Pyramid Layer Egypt Khaba stone limestone foundation base eroded sand one of two unfinished pyramids at Zawiyet el-Aryan of which this one is known as the Layer Pyramid and is attributed to King Khaba from Horus stone vases found nearby. The distinctive accretions of layers of inward sloping limestone bricks or shaped stones suggest an evolving the Step Pyramid construction started at Saqqara at Zawiyat al Aryan Zawiyet el Aryan dating from King Khaba in 2600BC so after the Step Pyramid. It is located north of Abu Ghurab and Abusir on the desert edge. It is situated near military bases and requires a local taxi driver to make the journey as not included on any but the most specialised Egyptological tours. A tradition throughout its ruling families means there are five towers for each family and sumptuous interiors from the 13th century to the Edwardian era are all on show. Landscaped parkland and a redeveloped 18th century walled garden are also on offer. It is a National Trust for Scotland property is situated 25 miles NW of Aberdeen on the Oldmeldrum to Turriff road [A947] and is open to the public from April to end of September and the grounds are normally open all year round. River Dee Invercauld zxc1853jhp Old Brig O’Dee Invercauld River Dee flora boulders eroded water summer Scottish Aberdeenshire is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream on a sunny summer morning. Linn Dee Braemar fgh2978jhp Linn River Dee Gorge Deeside rocks deep eroded water dramatic dangerous bridge is as far west as the metal road goes in Glen Dee and the Linn is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl or doubling back taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge and as far as the new National Trust for Scotland carpark. Please note that with this photo extra sharpening maybe needed as it was taken with an old prime 24mm lenses which does not have the ideal resolution of the D700 DSLR.
