Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Mammisi EG21213jhp Dendara temple Qena Nile Egypt mammisi birth house screen carving beautiful and considered some of the best and most delicate of workmanship of this period and here adorning the Roman mammisi of birth house attributed to Nectanebo 1. It shows the birth of the young God Harsomtus, child of Hathor and Horus of Edfu. This temple is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. Aswan Nile Cruise EG949334jhp Aswan Egypt cruiseboat deck swimming pool RA11 Eastmar Promenade Nile in southern Egypt with an array of restaurants, berths for cruiseboats and ferry landing points for trips on the river to hotels, Elephantine Island and Museum, Kitchener Botanical Gardens and trips in feluccas to the Nubian Villages or Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. This view is taken from the main top deck of the Eastmar RA11 which was the Egyptian end of the Kuoni package tours which at that time had a berth near the city centre. It was my first trip to Egypt in September 1994 and we had left Edfu after spending nearly a whole morning berthed after the temple trip because of gale force winds and rain storms and the journey south to Kom Ombo was decidedly uncomfortable at times. Arriving in Aswan to blue skies and glorious sunshine was a huge relief and sitting by the pool swept all those grey feelings away. This photo was taken of the outside of the huge enclosure wall which surrounds the temple giving some idea of the detailed and exquisite carvings that cover all the exterior walls. Edfu is one of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. In 200 the normal tourist entrance was from the north and you walked alongside the side of the temple wall and then round to enter the temple proper by the main pylon gate on the south face. However these days the tourist approach is from a new centre situated to the south and walking up to the temple is as was intended after its construction so that the immense pylon dominates as you arrive at the temple. Some cruise companies now use coaches as there have been complaints about the care of the horses that has upset visitors and I know on one occasion the driver of the carriage tried to make it race others to get to the temple first-our group warned him no baksheesh and he returned to a walking pace. Dendara InfR EG98117jhp Dendarah temple Egyptian mammisi birth house screen carving infra red B&W film and considered some of the best and most delicate of workmanship of this period and here adorning the Roman mammisi of birth house attributed to Nectanebo 1. It shows the birth of the young God Harsomtus, child of Hathor and Horus of Edfu. This temple is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

After a busy day maybe visiting temples or a hot day relaxing on deck watching the busy daily rural life along the River Nile, the evening sunset can be a quiet peaceful time in an otherwise hectic itinerary. I was only on the Atlas once and although small and compact with a real sense of age it was an enjoyable cruise and felt more intimate than I imagine those huge glass and marble multi storey cruiseboats are, Sadly these days I hear that many are rusting away at anchor because of the dire downturn in the tourist numbers as happened after the 1997 terrorist attacks in Luxor. Edfu Temple EG961829jh Edfu Temple Pylon Ancient Egyptian Mammisi Horus Ptolemaic impressive scale complete building viewed from the south and the remains of the mammisi or birth house is located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south. Beato Edfu Temple 8394VQJHP Edfu Anicent Egyptian Temple Colonnade Beato Photograph Albumen Print is at a site located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt and was photographed by Antonio Beato, a Victorian photographer probably around 1870. Beato Edfu Temple 18JHP05 Edfu Temple Pylon Highview River Nile Beato Old Victorian Albumen Photo Print is at a site located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon and was photographed by Antonio Beato, a Victorian photographer around 1890 and this copy is taken from his album called The Nile 1872. It is little changed from the modern situation as seen in identical viewpoints in the modern Gallery except that a large town now obscures the open view to the river in the Beato photo.
