Valley covered seating EG02078jhp Egypt Luxor West Bank Thebes Kings Valley covered seating shade in one of the most visited places in the world probably and certainly in Egypt is this desolate desert valley beneath the Theban mountain on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor famous for some of the most important Royal burials of this ancient civilisation. It is possible to climb over the hills above the Valley, pass above the huge amphitheatre of Deir el-Bahri above Hatshepsut’s spectacular Mortuary Temple and come down into Deir el-Medina, the workers village using the same paths as they must have done over 3000 years ago. This burning of the heather is an annual activity across the Scottish moors and hills allowing short young regenerated heather for easier access for the young grouse. Old heather gets very long, deep and thick and it is impossible for the grouse to eat and get around. On the Cabrach a few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. In the distance eastwards the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort can be seen and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. This photo is taken on the border between Aberdeenshire and Morayshire on the main road between Rhynie and Dufftown. Craigievar Beating Retreat 71931JHP Craigievar Castle Pipeband Bagpipes Kilts Drum-major Beating Retreat Scottish Aberdeenshire event on National Trust for Scotland property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round. This was an occasional event by a local pipeband beating retreat at the close of the season. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.
