Aswan Nile Cruise EG949334jhp
Aswan Egypt cruiseboat deck swimming pool RA11 Eastmar Promenade Nile in southern Egypt with an array of restaurants, berths for cruiseboats and ferry landing points for trips on the river to hotels, Elephantine Island and Museum, Kitchener Botanical Gardens and trips in feluccas to the Nubian Villages or Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery.

This view is taken from the main top deck of the Eastmar RA11 which was the Egyptian end of the Kuoni package tours which at that time had a berth near the city centre. It was my first trip to Egypt in September 1994 and we had left Edfu after spending nearly a whole morning berthed after the temple trip because of gale force winds and rain storms and the journey south to Kom Ombo was decidedly uncomfortable at times. Arriving in Aswan to blue skies and glorious sunshine was a huge relief and sitting by the pool swept all those grey feelings away.

Along the promenade are restaurants, berths of cruiseboats, ferry landing areas and to the south the Municipal Gardens, the Coptic Cathedral and the old and new Cataract Hotels, the former of course made famous in the film Death on the Nile. The bow of the RA11, an Eastmar operated cruiseboat lifted up to allow it to tuck in closer in the restricted space.

Egypt > River Nile Cruise & Sites (2 files)

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
River Nile Esna Traders EG052085jhp
Egypt Egyptian River Nile Esna lock cruiseboats traders boats RA water photos taken on the cruise from Luxor to Aswan and at the Esna Lock there was major congestion owing to only one lock in operation, although an additional one was being constructed. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south.
