It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Tomb Carving Neferbauptah EG050959jhp Neferbauptah Tomb Giza carving donkey loads carrying ancient Egyptian interior, who was Iymery’s son and a government official who held the title Steward of the Great estate like his father, and one of many private mastabas from the middle to late Dynasty V that make up the Western Cemetery near the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza with an interior painted wall relief in the tomb. Interior photography is difficult as flash and tripods are not usually allowed and interior lighting can be poor and gives inaccurate colour balances. This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx

It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. It also includes the balloon flights and views from the balloon.
Luxor West Bank EG96720812jhp Egypt Luxor West Bank Qurna River Nile dates Hatshepsut crops green taken in 1994 so from near the ferry crossing at Qurna al-Gaddah which was the option in those days from getting across the Nile looking across this fertile plain to the Theban Hills and in the direction of Hatshepsut Temple. Today the preferred method for package tours for crossing the River Nile is by the new southern road bridge and then heading north and westwards towards the main ancient sites of the West Bank. The scene is also a reminder of the wealth that was the engine that created ancient Egypt because of the fertility bordering the River Nile caused by the annual inundations with the flood waters depositing fertile mud giving abundant food sufficient to feed the large transient labour force required to build these huge monuments from Giza, Memphis, Thebes and southwards to Abu Simbel. Today fertilisation of the river farmland is by artificial means and of course has an impact on the Egyptian import bills. Through the work of the SCA the old houses of this area are being demolished and the modern occupants are be rehoused on new houses. After the removal of most of the houses an extensive exploration and survey of the area amongst the Tombs of the Nobles will be undertaken to identify any unidentified tombs while the various entrances to the existing tombs are being refurbished to make the area more accessible to visitors. Some of the better houses will be retained as part of a UNESCO sponsored museum as part of the history and occupation of the West Bank. Obviously a programme without some pain and opposition especially from locals who have lived in the area and over the tombs for generations but part of the necessary management and control of these irreplaceable ancient sites and the artefacts contained therein. Amarna, the ancient capital built by the heretic Pharaoh Akhetaten and his Queen Nefertiti which was later dismantled after their fall from power and much is now covered up by the desert although ongoing work Amarna Project has uncovered much of the temple area, increased the knowledge and understanding of this brief but important period in ancient Egyptian history as well as preserving and restoring much of the site. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
