None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Anubis in Pieces EG051912JHP Temple Merneptah Huge Limestone Anubis Carving Fragmented Photograph Luxor West Bank, an Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Bani Hassan EG076147jhp Beni Hasan Egypt resthouse tickets dog fields farming modern oleander flowers arrival at this site offering thirty nine tombs along the face of a bluff above the River Nile some 20km south of Minya make Bani Hasan a special visiting place for its decorations along the themes of wrestling, battle scenes and the collection of taxes by the nomarchs of the Oryx Nome give some beautiful tomb paintings to view - unfortunately photography inside the tombs was absolutely refused when I visited. It is fairly steep climb to the tombs but is on a properly constituted path with well spread out steps as some of the photographs show and offers some fantastic views of the River Nile bending its way through a rich green fertile area of fields and farming. Pieces of the pyramid’s capstone have been reconstructed and form a feature in what remains of the foundations of the Mortuary Temple on the east side. The site is near Faiyum, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
