On the top of the Dendara roof is this small Chapel of the Union with the Disk in the SW angle of the temple with 12 Hathor headed columns and although no roof might have had removeable wooden one allowing for sunlight to revive statues placed in its precinct. This is a view from the roof looking south westwards to the remains of the mudbrick enclosure wall, the modern town and the desert beyond. A large monumental gate dating from the Roman period probably from a nearby town is to the east, with remains of a temple complex dedicated to Horus and was the approach to the small Iseum, birth temple to Isis located at the rear of the main Hathor Temple. At the corner of the roof on the right is the small chapel of the union with the disk with its 12 Hathor headed cloumns. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Kom Ombo EG204330jhp Kom Ombo museum blocks Egypt hieroglyphics many symbols sharp carvings of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Valley Kings EG0213059jhp Egypt Valley Kings Luxor Thutmosis Tomb Hathor ankh cartouche solar disk in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor which was robbed in antiquity and later restored by Horemheb through his official Maya. In the Tomb-Chamber is a red granite sarcophagus with still very brilliant colourful decoration as illustrated in the photo of the Goddess Nephthys. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera and adjustments in Photoshop reasonably accurate colours can be exhibited of tomb paintings lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash are not allowed such as the head of Anubis. This was taken before the current ban on tomb photography was introduced when you could purchase a ticket to photograph in two tombs in 2002. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well.
