Photos in this gallery are of Edfu Temple, one of the best preserved in Egypt, and usually the first first visit after leaving Luxor ona Nile Cruise.
Edfu Temple EG203821jhp Edfu Temple ambulatory carvings offering scene Hathor dieties wine Egyptian walkway walls sides is located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. This photo was taken inside the ambulatory a walled walkway surrounding the temple and which is covered in many beautiful and detailed carvings in sunk relief and although some have been damaged by later Christian zealots the overall quality of this workmanship is awesome. Edfu is one of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Karnak Saite Chapel EG0214016jhp Karnak Egypt Chapel Ankhnesneferibre cobra Wadjet lion face hierogylphics which is located inside the central enclosure wall of the Karnak complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. Interesting in this photograph are the lion faced Wadjet Cobras which are very much a Delta Goddess diety. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. Karnak Khonsu Opet Temple EG075025jhp Karnak Temple Luxor Khonsu Opet Apet Ptolemaic Amun Osiris cult located to the SW corner of this huge sprawling site on the East Bank of the River Nile near the modern City of Luxor and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. The nicely decorated Temple of Opet or Apet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing and is located on the SE corner of the main Khonsu was mainly a Ptolemaic Temple and in practice dedicated to Amun who had by this time assumed much of the characteristics of Osiris. Like Khonsu itself is is well preserved, usually not very busy and a delightful escape from the crowded areas around the main Karnak site. This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara Carving EG051145jhp Saqqara Unas deep cut hieroglyphs carving ancient Egyptian netcher flax that can be seen in small chapels near the restored causeway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits. Valley Kings EG0213049jhp Egypt Luxor Tomb KV19 Prince Mentuherkhepshef Khonsu Solar Disk Crescent painting colour was son of Ramasses 1X, but his tomb was unfinished but has some excellent colourful depictions of the important ancient Egyptian Gods and although protected by Perspex panels, the custodian was very helpful and slid them back for me to take photographs in 2002 when it was still allowed. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well.
