Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora bnm6451jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland spring Northern Lights waning display rays purple red Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the evening of 27th March, 2017 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen, starting around 21.43UT and was indicated by the magnetometer readings on AuroraWatch. Although cloud was forecast earlier the display happened before the cloud arrived but when it got dark enough to see it. A low grade Arc was visible to the North, beneath Cassiopeia at 21.44, it went active shortly afterwards with faint multiple rays with bright bases on the arc and some lateral movement, North to West and it died down again very quickly at 21.47UT, allowing approximately 10 exposures. Colours not visible to the human eye to the brightness this photo records. Magnetometer suggested possible further activity but by 22.00 there was 100% cloud cover. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 aperture, ISO3200 for 8 seconds at 21.47.18hrsUT and was my last exposure as it almost disappeared at this stage. The increased ISO sensitivity of modern DSLR’s allows for shorter exposures circa 10 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving events. Small meteor burn out visible about 1/3 in from left just in the faint purple band. Colours not visible to the human eye to the brightness this photo records. Aurora Deeside au93432ajhp Aurora Borealis Scottish winter December 1993 rays red display Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the evening of 7th December, 1993 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking mainly north from the cottage to left of a gean tree which is aligned to magnetic North. The display started early but very low grade around 22.45 with faint light towards North in between clouds. I had received a call on answerphone from a friend Gordon Brodie suggesting he had seen something and after returning from a lecture I spotted faint flashes and rays around 21.30hrs. Rang John MacNicol around 22.25 although still probably a frost haze. At 22.45 faint light in clouds although again could be frost haze, it was -5C but around 23.25 some rays started to appear. This photo was taken at 23.40hrs UT as the display strengthened but it died down around 00.05hrs on the morning of the 8th. The photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP 11 rated at 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 24mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. An active display and this photo was one of several taken between 9 and 9.15pm before the display died down. It did start again later around 11.30pm but was a very poor arc and limited activity just after midnight on the 9th. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP11 processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2 and usually 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Deeside Aurora 2015 vbn1749jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish green double arc arcs rays Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the 31st December, 2015 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen caused over the UK from a glancing CME and a timely end to the year gift given that the previous three displays I missed because of cloud cover. This photo was taken at 23.55UT with the ARC deveoping into a double as the first active phase of the evenings display dies down, a common pattern although in this case the display started a slow decline despite another small surge of activity as in vbn1777 an hour or so later. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 and ISO setting of 3200 with an exposure time of 18 secs. This is taken looking due North and the green tinge is from low level oxygen gas at Crooktree, located between Torphins to the right and Craigton Hill and Kincardine O'Neil to the left. Aswan Aga Khan EG949027jhp Egyptian Aswan river Nile Aga Khan Mausoleum start steps elegant beautiful and a visit is often a part of a trip to visit an exhibition Nubian Village passed by boats travelling to the cataract islands such as Seheil or on the traditional afternoon sail offered in most tour packages and one route for those visiting the Monastery of St Simeon. What is also important is the close awareness of the inhospitable nature of the cataracts, now benign because of the impact of the two dams across the river, but imagining these huge rocks in a Nile inundation and one could understand the barrier that it created for those travellers trying to head further south by boat. The Mausoleum is for the Third Aga Khan who died in 1957 built by his widow his Begum or former wife and is in solid marble. The current Aga Kahn, his grandson Karim, is the leader of the Shi i Sect of Ismaili Muslims. The Tomb is occasionally open but usually a visit entails a climb by steps and apart from a close view of this beautiful building offers wonderful view over Aswan and the River Nile. Lying to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness. Looking across this valley from this point to the ruins of Tullich Kirk one of the oldest Christian Churches on Deeside which is beside the North Deeside Road. Just to the right of centre poking above the trees is the top of an obelisk of Aberdeen granite in memoery of William Farquharson of Monaltrie who died in 1828-erected by his widow. It made no movement when I photographed it and when I blew gently on it remained completely still; I thought it had died and was stuck to the buddleia however after I returned a few minutes later it had disappeared. I checked the ground to see if it had fallen but it was no where to be seen. I had seen a large dragonfly flying the day before around the area although I was unable to get close enough to identify it. The main source of natural water is a small stream and there are some stagnant pools in the nearby forest where deep tyre tracks from tree harvesters had operated a few years before. Forres Springtime wtn2138jhp Forres Moray Scottish Spring Mosset Burn Crimea obelisk Thomson daffodils commemorating the work of a Scottish Doctor who died at the Battle of Alma in 1854. The obelisk is made of Peterhead Granite and stands 50 foot high and is surrounded in the springtime with pink and white cherry blossom. In the summer the town, this ancient Royal Burgh with a charter dating back to 1496 and perhaps even earlier is adorned with a famous park of hedge sculptures and extensive floral displays in its sunken garden making this a popular place for visitors. The town dating to ancient times lies to the east of the River Findhorn and the Burn of Mosset also offers an additional water feature. It alos has the Nelson Tower the first monument in Britain celebrating Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. To the east of the town is the stone cross-slab obelisk called the Sueno Stone, recording the victory of the Picts over the Danes in 1014AD. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

The road crosses over the moorlands peaking at the Cairn O’Mount with a viewpoint for views southwards to the coast near Montrose and the whole of the flat fertile Howe of Mearns plain south as far as Dundee. Looking over the very narrow single lane Spital Brig is an old ruin by the Spital Burn which once was a ‘Spital’ or Hospital, a hostel for weary travellers either crossing the Cairn drove road or herdsmen moving cattle south to the Lowland Markets. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. The small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s.
