Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Roman Mammisi eg075601jhp Dendara Temple Birth House Roman Trajan offering ancient Egypt located at this home of the Goddess Hathor, north of Luxor surviving as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. The photo is of the Roman birth house or mammisi built by Trajan with some of the finest carvings in Egypt, here with the King Trajan making offering to her wearing the Deshret, the Red Crown of Lower Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Karnak The White Chapel EG074913jhp Egyptian Karnak White Chapel Senwosret Museum Amun Min crowns hieroglyhs was one of the original and stars of the Open Air Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. As the oldest reconstruction at the site, dating from around 1970 -26 BC, testifies to one of the richest periods of craftsmanship in ancient Egypt, achieved perhaps because of the stability of his reign of over 30 years and is considered the peak of craftsmanship in the 12th Dynasty shown in some exquisite examples of jewellery found at Dashur. This area is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including one of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel and another from the reign of Thutmosis 1V, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Luxor Temple is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues at the entrance to the first pylon. Facing the pylon is the long Avenue of Sphinxes attributed to Nectanebo 1 which went completed would have joined up with Karnak Temple and recent reclamation work had established much of this avenue running through the town.
