The Botanical Gardens are a pleasant relaxing visit with walks though tree covered paths, splashes of colourful flowers, wild birds and the occasional cat by places to sit and the usual rest house at the main disembarking area when the visit is completed. Busy in th early morning with coach and aircraft tours arriving from Aswan and Luxor. For cruiseboat tours a quiet period is often around 10.30am and is the time for the best light on the facade - afternoon visits mean the front is in the shade. This is the wooden coffin of Khennu, Chancellor to the Gods, from the Middle Kingdom and the small figure of his son Ipiemsafipi stands right of centre along with with other exhibits of funerary goods such as the wooden boat and carved figures all part of the team to assist the departed in the afterlife. It is difficult to avoid reflections in the glass especially as access to take photographs is restricted, tripods and flash is banned and I understand that since I visited there has been an overall photography ban applied. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
Montrose Station Departs qax5673jhp Montrose church spire town railway station Scotland platform departure turbostar diesel train southbound Glasgow a major town south of Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland which has a developed harbour with oil and offshore renewals support facilities. The harbour has a long history of supporting trade across the North Sea with my own forebears working in the wood shipping trade in the 1800’s. A WW2 airfield of note with contemporary museum, beautiful beach, strong academic history, golf course and many other attractions on offer. The basin at Montrose, a tidal inland lake is rich with bird life especially as a roosting area for geese in the winter months. This view is from the railway station on the main east coast line from Aberdeen to Edinburgh and further south to London.
