The ruin, probably originally a large four storey family house with little evidence of being a defensive fort in the usual manner seen around Aberdeenshire is thought to have been built in the 17th Century by the Clan Morrison around 1660. Braemar-Castle-qax8460jhp Braemar Castle fort autumn rainbow wintry larch trees Royal Deeside Scottish was built in 1628 by John Earl of Mar was basically a pitched roof over the main tower and some turrets. Later in the 18th century the battlements and unusual star-shaped defensive curtain wall were added. It was forfeited to the crown after the 1715 rebellion and were later sold to the Farquharson’s of Invercauld and rented back to the Crown as a Hanoverian garrison post until 1831. It has a barrel vaulted ceilings, an iron yett, an open wrought iron metal grid, covering an underground dungeon with its bottle neck entrance. Since then it has been a private property until recently by Invercauld Estate and is now run as a tourist attraction by a local community trust after refurbishment with exhibitions reflecting its, and the local area history. The sign in the foreground is a message of hope that the Corona Virus pandemic will be beaten. The photo was taken by luck on 21st November, 2020 at around 11.20UT. As a private property now in the control of a local charity then these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Castle is accessible for exterior viewing all year round with easy parking at nearby carpark but the interiors during summer months at weekends from 11-4 or by prior appointment. Balvenie Castle bnm9693jhp Balvenie Castle defensive ditch mound fortress walls Dufftown Morayshire Historic Scotland property which requires payment on entry. Started in the Late 13th century during the reign of King James with later additions during the mid 1500’s, it held a commanding position at the meeting of several Glens and a strategic position that kept it in use until abandonment in 1720. A quadrangular curtain wall of great proportion still remains as does some of a deep vertically side surrounding ditch which were all part of its substantial defences. One of the several attractions of this Highland town founded in 1817, centre of the whisky distillery country with seven distilleries surrounding it of which Glenfiddich is the best known, which is busy with visitors from around the world following the Malt Whisky Trail. This view is from the layby above Cockbridge before the start of the main climb over the Lecht. The summit of Lochnagar is just visible through the cleft in the hills directly above the Castle. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself.
