This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. Luxor Sobek Stele EG962098JHP Egyptian Museum Luxor Stele Stela Sobek Ima Tree Pia Worship Priest was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit was found at Dahamsha at the Sawahel Armant Canal in 1967 and includes the Priest Pia and his son, wife and mother offering to the Crocodile God Sobek and it is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Tanis Crocodile Relief 1317EG05jhp Tanis Ancient Egyptian Sheshonq tomb wall reliefs crocodile Horus Suchos at this Royal Necropolis locatedon the Tanis site to the side of main and famous Royal Tomb of Psusennes which was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. Tanis was once held to be the capital created by Ramses, now thought to be in the Quantir area but it was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. The site has a Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Hawara Pyramid eg01315jhp Hawara Faiyum Amenemhet pyramid discarded limestone carving crocodiles lying around, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty, Middle Kingdom, by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core which still stands dominant and substantial but the limestone covering of Tura Limestone is now all missing. The entrance on the south side is visible but the high ground water table means it is flooded as are all the lower chamber areas. It is most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains except for a large area of sandy mounds and hollows divided by a canal; new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems it appears unfinished at the time of his death c1797BC. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara Carvings EG051130jhp Saqqara Wenis Unas Causeway carvings reliefs ancient Egypt crocodile meseh that remain and have been built into the restored walkway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits.
