Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring. The location has had a history going back for over 800 years, there was a medieval Palace for the Bishop’s of Aberdeen, which was located to the south of the present house in the photograph. SEPP have carried out excavations of the site finding considerable evidence of the early palace. The current house dates from around 1566 after it was acquired by the Leslies of Balquhain although from a small tower originally it has expanded to the present façade in 1818. The carved panel above the main entrance is attributed to Count Patrick Leslie around 1690. Although it is accessible to view it is in a dangerous state of disrepair and is fenced off from public access. Fetternear House bnm6651jhp Fetternear House spring daffodils front ruin shell towers front castellated historical building located near Kemnay Aberdeenshire near the River Don which was gutted by a fire in 1919 and has remained a shell ever since. The location has had a history going back for over 800 years, there was a medieval Palace for the Bishop’s of Aberdeen, which was located to the south of the present house in the photograph. SEPP have carried out excavations of the site finding considerable evidence of the early palace. The current house dates from around 1566 after it was acquired by the Leslies of Balquhain although from a small tower originally it has expanded to the present façade in 1818. The carved panel above the main entrance is attributed to Count Patrick Leslie around 1690. Although it is accessible to view it is in a dangerous state of disrepair and is fenced off from public access.
