Bellabeg Lost wyy6103jhp Bellabeg motte Lost roadsign famous stolen Strathdon Scotland summer farm querky scene just to the west of Bellabeg village crossing the Nochty road bridge by the Spar Grocery store from the main Strathdon road. This roadsign to a farm of this name has been so famous that the council roadsign has disappeared on several occasions. Just to the west of this road is the impressive motte which can be seen from the road. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen.The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. A prehistoric site of round houses or hut circles and souterrains [earth houses], buried stone lined chambers used for food storage and associated with settled occupation around an adjacent field system with additional food sourced from the lochs. There is a crannog in Loch Kinord. Generally dating from 2nd century BC through to 3rd Century AD little in the way of artefacts has ever been found. However these are substantial structures and a new one was identified in addition to those originally identified and modern techniques such as drone have allowed a more accurate overview of the area to be made and further modern soil and plant life analysis has added to the overall knowledge of the site and this period of man’s early Deeside history. Nearby is of course the very spectacular Bronze Age hilltop Recumbent Stone Circle at Tomnaverie excavated and partially restored by Reading University over two seasons in 1999 and 2000. The Church of St Nathalan dating from the late 1700’s possibly on an early site founded in 450AD by St Nathalan with records from the 12th Century indicating ownership to Arbroath Abbey. In the grounds is a mort house. About ¼ mile to the south was the location of Coull Castle, a substantial fortress in the early 13th Century, of which nothing remains today. Continuing up the single lane road northwards brings you to the Slack of Tillylodge and the Queen’s viewpoint with spectacular views over Deeside towards Morven and the distant outline of Lochnagar Britain’s fourth highest mountain. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside.
