Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora over Deeside rty1913jhp Aurora Northern Lights Scotland 2012 green rays Aberdeenshire arc stars taken on the 1st October 2012 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I have seen this back quarter and probably the best display now photographed since end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens and ISO settings of 3200 which allows for much shorter exposure circa 6 sec average times with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. The light conditions were not perfect as the background light was from the full moon but dispels any myths that Aurora’s cannot be seen under such conditions. Taken in the garden looking westwards as activity starts behind clouds at 00.20.30hrs UT [01.20.30BST] with an exposure of 3.8 secs. Gaps in the clouds are miracles for otherwsie nothing of this display would have been visible. Although forecast on Spaceweather.com as likely to occur, it was northern watchers that were advised to be alert, usually a sign it will not reach the UK. The Auroral Oval however dropped southwards to the 60 latitude and graphic data minor to amber alert on AuroraWatch.co.uk suggested it was worth checking outside. The High Dam is often visited during a trip to the Unfinished Obelisk in a local quarry as a break from many other after the Philae island excursion with many trips offered on the river to hotels, Elephantine Island and Museum, Kitchener Botanical Gardens and trips in feluccas to the Nubian Villages or Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. Along the promenade are restaurants, berths of cruiseboats, ferry landing areas and to the south the Municipal Gardens, the Coptic Cathedral and the old and new Cataract Hotels, the former of course made famous in the film Death on the Nile. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
