Aurora over Scotland (5 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

One of the first nights without a cloud problem to the North and what I suspected were faint rays proved correct when the photographs were processed. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 aperture, ISO setting of 6400 for 14 seconds at 23.29hrsUT. The increased ISO sensitivity of modern DSLR’s allows for shorter exposures circa 12 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving events. One of the first nights without a cloud problem to the North and what I suspected were faint rays proved correct when the photographs were processed. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f5.6 aperture, ISO setting of 6400 for 11 seconds at 23.27hrsUT which was slightly underexposed. The increased ISO sensitivity of modern DSLR’s allows for shorter exposures circa 12 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving events. This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara Tomb Entrance EG051147jhp Saqqara buried tomb door lintel carved entrance hieroglyphs ancient Egyptian is alongside the restored walkway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits. Advised by my custodian guide this was the Tomb of Nefer-mery but I can find no reference to it in any books or the Internet but I have had it confirmed that this is probably correct based on the hieroglyphics on the tomb entrance. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well.
