Glen Gairn road Gairnsheil hill heather ruined croft Aberdeenshire Scotland is one of the main routes northwards venturing over the Lecht to Inverness, via Tomintoul and Granton on Spey. The Lecht ski centre is also one of the busiest centres on the south side of the Cairngorms during Scotland’s often ill-defined and variable winter season but during the summer months is a favourite route with the famous humpbacked single track bridge at Gairnsheil, the purple flowering heather moorland between there and Cock Bridge, past Corgarff Castle and then after Tomintoul, the Bridge of Brown, after passing through Glen Avon.

Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation. It is located on the Banks of the River Dee in the community of Crathie mid-way between the towns of Ballater and Braemar on the A93. Lochnagar, the fourth highest mountain in Britain lies to the south of the estate and its distinct shape can be seen on the horizon line.
The estate and building are private belonging to Her Majesty the Queen and although open to the public for certain times of the year are not public property.
