Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

Aurora Borealis bands streaming pulsing October 1995 Aberdeenshire Scotland taken on the evening of the 18th October, 1995 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to west. This photo was taken at 22.00hrsUT with strong pulsating bands of light coming from the west over Kincardine O’Neil direction. The activity continued until the early hours of the morning of the 19th and was the last Aurora display recorded by me until April 1996 when I was photographing Comet Hyakutake. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds.

Scottish aircraft strobe lights Aurora Borealis red colour Deeside February 1990 taken on the Harestone Road by The Ley tree to the west of Banchory taken at a corner layby opposite the entrance to the Ley Farm which I tended to use more as it was more convenient and this tree at the entrance gave a very striking foreground. This photo was from one of three films taken on the 16th-20th of February of which this is the 20th February this one around 21.50hrs UT as it started to come active and is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. I have already added other photos taken during this same display but using Fuji RSP11 film stock so it was a busy night but activity waxes and wanes so there are bursts of active bright displays followed by very subdued periods with little activity, maybe some flashes or a general colour hue in the sky. I took this photo of the Aurora display using the Fuji RHP 35mm slide film rated at 400asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 800asa. They were exposed around the 15-20 seconds around the 20secs I later settled on as about the best combined with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more saturated. The line of dots are the landing lights from commercila aircraft on approach to landing at Aberdeen Airport and in those days no flights could land after 10.00pm. There was activity on the nights of the 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th and I found during the 90’s there were often displays several nights in a row as later photos will illustrate whereas after 2006 most displays seem only to last one night and often several months apart so a very different Solar Cycle

These locations became my usual choices for most of the Aurora displays I photographed when living in Banchory throughout the early 90’s, as easily accessible from Banchory and with a clear light pollution free view to the North which meant that any clear night was spent watching the Northern skies for the tell-tale signs of a possible display, usually proceeded by an area of obvious brightness on the evening before the main display. It also gave easy access to Crathes Castle which featured a couple of times as different foreground to Aurora displays.

Aurora Borealis Torphins Scottish Northern Lights Plough stars green rays Deeside taken on the 1st October 2012 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I have seen this back quarter and probably the best display now photographed since end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens and ISO settings of 3200 which allows for much shorter exposure circa 6 sec average times with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. The light conditions were not perfect as the background light was from the full moon but dispels any myths that Aurora’s cannot be seen under such conditions. Looking magentic North with multiple rays coming off an arc at 00.36.14hrs UT [01.36.14BST] with an exposure of 14 secs. The Plough or Ursa Major is visible directly above with rays to the left beneath this constellation, a useful winter marker for locating displays with the street lights of Torphins on the right.

Strong activity at the base of the rays is indicated by the hotspots showing up this activity visible through a gap in the clouds.

This illustrates the problem with cloud making it difficult to see Aurora displays and here several of the rays extend higher than the cloud line.

Hatshepsut Temple Luxor fertile land West Bank Nile vista stairs view coming down from the Upper or central court was opened again in 2002 and makes the visit to this magificent temple almost complete except that entrance into the burial chmaber itself is restricted and leaving one has this vista to the River Nile and the West Bank. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings.

Karnak Temple Egypt Entrance Exit Avenue Rows First Pylon Crio-sphinxes located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. In this photo are a row of ram-headed sphinxes, known as crio-sphinxes, as they take the form of ram with a lion's body straddling a small form of the pharaoh here, Ramses 11 in the form of Osiris, in the avenue from the old harbour entry to the temple with the first pylon in the background. The sphinxes were probably originally constructed by Amenhotep 11 or Horemheb but their identity replaced by Ramses 11 and even later again changed by Pinedjem 1, an evolution possibly spanning some 300 years. The entrance into Karnak is between the two rows of sphinxes but leaving the site you come round the back of the nearest row to the main coachpark.

Luxor Nile Balloons flight soaring Western desert landing hills Egypt after passing the several famous temples situated on the West Bank location of the Nile at Luxor. Apart from the main sites visited, in this general area are several Tombs of the Nobles which are usually privately organised visits but very well worth the time if you have a few days to spare in Luxor. The balloon flight illustrated here was in 1994 and there were only two although in later years these increased greatly in numbers. This trip took off from the front of Hatshepsut just after dawn, a cold and interesting crossing of the Nile in the dark and long before the modern road bridge and eventually landed in the desert where the Hilton Hotel put on a beautiful breakfast buffet. I understand in recent times the breakfast has come to a boxed meal probably eaten on the bus journey back to the hotel or cruiseboat.

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south.

Banchory Blackhall silver granite gates castle fishing lodge Deeside summer is located just before crossing the road bridge over the River Dee into Banchory coming from the south. This large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The gates are all that remains of the castle, demolished after WW2 but now serves as a fishing lodge and entrance to the fishing beat alongside the River Dee on the south bank extending westwards. Although the gates tend to be locked it is not ‘private’ land and should be accessible as a riverside walk in terms of the Land Reform [Scotland] Act 2003.

This road passes St Palladius Church and Drumtochty Castle in Glen Drumtochty which has interesting Forest Enterprise walks through mixed mature woodland and after leaving the forest the road enters Strathfinella passing this delightful loch near Glensaugh, used for fishing and often visited by ducks and swans.

Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Topiary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden.

Crathes Castle west herbaceous border lavender entrance July sunshine Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland of which one of the centre pieces is the walled garden of this historic property with this path coming from the main entrance and ticket office past the West Herbaceous Border by the wall and which goes to the steps to the higher level with the Croquet Lawn and Upper Pool Garden and to one of many secluded peaceful parts and on this July day blessed with bright sunshine and blue skies. The building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.
