Aurora over Scotland (1 file)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Crathes Castle au721134jhp British Aurora Borealis Crathes Castle golden cock autumn oxygen red weathervane reflection moonlight located at this National Trust for Scotland property near Banchory, west of Aberdeen. Taken on the 9th October at 23.46 hrs UT is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops however this particular film was Fuji P1600 which for a short time was their fastest slide film. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left. In these photos there is the purple of nitrogen gas being excited as against the more common occurrence of red and green oxygen gas and probably also a function of the lighter light levels given these were taken in August. Huntly Spring Flowers asd7283jhp Huntly spring flowers trees beech River Deveron Aberdeenshire Scotland walks, near the Castle which in its present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the River Deveron near its joining the Bogie at the town of Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. Glen Gairn Lecht Road qwe8411jhp Glen Gairn road Gairnsheil hill heather ruined croft Aberdeenshire Scotland is one of the main routes northwards venturing over the Lecht to Inverness, via Tomintoul and Granton on Spey. The Lecht ski centre is also one of the busiest centres on the south side of the Cairngorms during Scotland’s often ill-defined and variable winter season but during the summer months is a favourite route with the famous humpbacked single track bridge at Gairnsheil, the purple flowering heather moorland between there and Cock Bridge, past Corgarff Castle and then after Tomintoul, the Bridge of Brown, after passing through Glen Avon. Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring. Partridge on Dyke xvv1381jhp Partridge red-legged bird Scottish Deeside colours plumage Alectoris rufa standing on a stone wall and showing off its very striking feather patterns from black throat band, red legs and black and white side panels all making it ideal camouflage when running in the undergrowth. This particular bird was brought onto the estate as part of a selection of more interesting birds for the seasonal rough shooting and is not a native of this part of Scotland. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on.
