Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Temple West Wall EG007131jhp Dendara Temple exterior reliefs ancient Egyptian west wall elephant hierogylphs Hathor is located north of Luxor and survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of reliefs on outside of the west wall of the main temple walking down to the sacred lake and small temple of Isis. Dendara Roman Mammisi eg075610jhp Dendara Temple Birth House Roman Hathor statue platform offering ancient Egyptian located at this home of the Goddess Hathor, north of Luxor surviving as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. The photo is of the Roman birth house or mammisi built by Trajan with some of the finest carvings in Egypt, here with scenes of Hathor suckling her son Ihy and another of him behind her with the King Trajan making offering to her. Tut Golden Serpent EG11704JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit cobra Ureaus Gilded Gold Hood Tutankhamun Exhibition in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. Karnak Painted Lintel EG074955jhp Karnak Egypt Festival Hall Thutmose painted lintel door hieroglyphs stars ceiling near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photograph is of detail of the still visible coloured decoration of the Festival Hall of Thutmose 111. The hall was constructed next to one of the oldest areas of Karnak Temple. This is a complex mix of columned hall, chapels, magazines which are not represented in these photos and included an area described as Akhmenu by the ULCA Karnak Archive but not mentioned a such in any other guide books. This area covers the famous botanical garden suite with plants found on his military campaigns into Palestine, a suite for the underworld God Sokar and beyond the remains of a stand of beautiful papyrus columns described as the Colonnade of Tuthmosis 111. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. Amadah Temple Hieroglyphs EG051583JHP Amadah Temple Interior Photo Wall Carving Hieroglyphs Ankh Maat Cobra located on the shores of Lake Nasser weighing 900tons was rescued from the flooding of the River Nile to create Lake Nasser by French engineers who towed it in one piece 2.5km from Kurusku. The sandstone temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte was built by Thutmosis 111, Amenhotep 11 and Tuthmosis 1V. One of several small antiquities visited during a Lake Nasser cruise it has some coloured wall reliefs still intact and is then fallowed after a short walk to the Rock Cut Temple of al-Derr. Ptolemaic Temple Hieroglyphs EG051870JHP Deir el-Medina Temple Colourful Frieze Hieroglyphs Cobra Ankh Stars Painted Reliefs is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. These particular exhibits are in an annex displaying statues discovered in 1989 in a storage pit and called The Luxor Temple Cachette of which the red quartzite life size statue of Amenhotep 111 is one of the finest pieces of carving yet found in Egypt. Tanis Sheshonq Relief 1327EG05jhp Tanis Ancient Egypt tomb Sheshonq cobra snakes towing barque wedjat wall reliefs located site to side of main and famous Royal Tomb of Psusennes which was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. Tanis was once held to be the capital created by Ramses, now thought to be in the Quantir area but it was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. The site has a Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy. Tell Basta Cobra Frieze EG077103JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple cobra frieze granite carving ancient Egyptian site Delta is a large complex near the town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
Silsila Riverside Shrine EG052414JHP Egypt Egyptian Ancient Silsila Nile Shrines Ramasses Cobras Freize Photo stands out sharply as the river narrows at the cult location north of Aswan and a well known marker for the Nile cruises as one nears or leaves the ancient marshland known as the Kom Ombo Basin. Nearby the distinctive large rock a remnant of the ancient quarrying are three riverside shrines of Merneptah, Ramasses 11 and Sety 1 although the later and the landing berth have been badly damaged by earthquakes many centuries ago. Photo is slightly soft and will need sharpening.
