After the removal of most of the houses an extensive exploration and survey of the area amongst the Tombs of the Nobles will be undertaken to identify any unidentified tombs while the various entrances to the existing tombs are being refurbished to make the area more accessible to visitors. Some of the better houses will be retained as part of a UNESCO sponsored museum as part of the history and occupation of the West Bank. Abu Rawash Pyramid eg076735jhp Egypt Abu Rawash pyramid 4th Dynasty Djedefre second enclosure clearance this site is situated north west of Giza this site on high ground near the village of Abu Rawash and has the remains of a pyramid ascribed to the Pharaoh Djedefre, the successor to Khufu both of the 4th Dynasty around 2500BC. The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Obviously avoid damaging crops although access should be left. Wonderful panoramic views over Aberdeenshire and Donside to the south and west with the hill of Bennachie in centre distance. The general view many years after this photo to Bennachie has been ruined by an inappropriately situated huge metal barn and a good illustration at the thoughtless planning permission rules operated in Aberdeenshire. Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face. It was relocated to the henge for safe keeping during Victorian times. The site has been recently excavated by Reading University and more cremated bones in complete urns have been found. Glassel Stones Scotland VR0271JHP Glassel Stone Circle Setting Aberdeenshire Scotland Spiritual Photo Forest Canny Burn or stream opposite to the entrance to Glassel ouse on the Banchory to Torphins backroad. Accessed through commercial forest it requires some walking through rough ground and this is how they appear after recent clear felling adjacent to the site. They were reckoned to be an early transitional phase after recumbent stone circles with possible evidence of a cist burial lid lying in the centre foreground; it was excavated in 1904. It is situated on the edge of Leuchar Moss. Excavated in 1934, evidence was found of cremation in a series of kerb cairns and from wood charcoal analysis it is suggested this occurred at different times in history. Dated from 2nd Millennium BC, it is argued it was a later development of the more common Recumbent Stone Circles. This site is cared for by Historic Scotland and is open to the public with easy access from the nearby public road. A few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. In the distance can be seen the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. St Mary s Auchindour Kirk WTN1861JHP St Mary's Church Scotland Tombstones Shadows Trees Grass Moss Cemetery Aberdeenshire is situated by the Cabrach road and reached by taking first left turning after Lumsden on road to Rhynie and Huntly in North East Aberdeenshire near Morayshire. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with this fine Scottish medieval door and has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. Next to it is spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees.
