Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.

These structures in the entrance courts are the remains of ablution wells supplying water for the priests to maintain the ritual purity required. Karnak Carved Wall EG074977jhp Luxor Karnak Temple Egyptian Carving Central Court wine pouring damaged near the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. The photo is taken around the fourth and fifth pylon and shows possibly a Tuthmosis cartouche but they appear to be damaged, maybe deliberately, but there is hint at the beautiful craftsman ship with the section on the back right showing pouring of the wine nd the clean cut delicate nature of the carvings. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
Esna Temple EG02510jhp Egyptian Esna Temple Ptolemaic hypostyle hall columns capitals floral ceiling is a small gem deep in a hollow under the modern town building line. The hypostyle hall is all that remains of one of the latest temples to be built in Egypt by Ptolemy V1 and V111 and Roman additions with recordings of most Roman Emperors mentioned to the last recorded being Decius c AD240. For me it has some of the loveliest intact columns, with great attention of the detail and still a hint of colour from the bottom to the top of these huge floral capitals where the craftsmanship leaps off every surface. Standing in its centre it is easy to imagine being in the symbolic creation of the original papyrus marsh. It is a temple not usually visited on the standard River Nile cruise tour package but used to be accessible if berthed alongside the town with a long delay to get through old single lock system expected as it is only a short walk from the waterfront; probably not so realistic these days. Part of the City of Aberdeen, this northern area around the University was also a separate burgh and the focus for the oldest part of the city and especially its links with the University and the religious centre with St Machar's Cathedral Kirk nearby. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day although it has been more recently cleaned. Aberdeen Provost Skene House xv0205jhp Provost Skene House Aberdeen Scotland Spring Museum bronze Broad blue sky is the charming museum and cafe incorporated into Aberdeen's oldest surviving house with its fascinating religious paintings of unknown date or origin. The pool in the forground is dranined for cleaning but is usually full thoughout most of the year. Currently to the right of this view was the huge modern edifice of St Nicolas House, the council offices but they are now in the process of being demolished and one hope that a more fitting central area facing the majestic Marischal College will be created. Despite research the general theory is that of maintaining its feathers possibly stimulating the Vitamin D produced in its preen-oil gland or maybe regulating its temperature on hot days. I have seen sparrows also doing a similar thing but on the ground, especially if it is sandy and wondered if it might be to do with cleaning away mites, as part of the sand bath activity-hen pheasants also seem to like this and often create their own sand bowl for regular use.
