Dendara Temple exterior rear ancient Egyptian construction platform basal dovetails photograph is located north of Luxor and survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of paving blocks on the limestone foundation platform on outside of the rear wall of the main temple adjacent to the sacred lake and small temple of Isis. The blocks were strengthened by the use of dovetail cemented joints.

This photo is of a closup of one of the dovetail joints connecting adjacent blocks of limestone and would have been filled with mortar cement for additional strength.

In this photo is the crown like monument built by the Russian workmen in celebration of the completion of the project which they built in co-operation with the People of Egypt. The High Dam is often visited during a trip to the Unfinished Obelisk in a local quarry as a break from many other after the Philae island excursion with many trips offered on the river to hotels, Elephantine Island and Museum, Kitchener Botanical Gardens and trips in feluccas to the Nubian Villages or Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. Along the promenade are restaurants, berths of cruiseboats, ferry landing areas and to the south the Municipal Gardens, the Coptic Cathedral and the old and new Cataract Hotels, the former of course made famous in the film Death on the Nile.

Karanis Kom Aushim Temple Foundations Materials Construction Stones Egyptian Ruined city on the north eastern edge of the area known as Fayoum and dates from Ptolemaic times through to 500AD. Two Roman dated temples survive in reasonable state and the southern one whose foundation construction detail is shown in this photo is dedicated to the crocodile Gods of Pnepheros and Petesuchos. Many finds have been made especially of life in a residential area with houses scattered throughout the site and there is also a fine Roman bathhouse. A small museum now closed has ben replaced with an open air area with a selection of artefacts adjacent to the main walk to the temples.

Hypostyle Hall Karnak Egypt Temple Columns Roof beams repairs patching taken in late afternoon light unfortunately during a sand storm so the general light was very poor. This early part of a visit to Karnak is on a huge sprawling a site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This is the most famous and awesome part of The Great Temple of Amun, the hypostyle hall with it huge columns, the central ones reaching 23m high. Originally erected by Seti 1 and was completed by his son Ramses 11 and although today despite lacking in overall perfection is still overwhelming in its scale. This photo is taken from inside the great columned hall and where diminutive figures appear one can gauge the huge scale and fantastic workmanship of the skilled builders who worked with basic tools and no modern mechanical equipment.

River Nile Minya Egypt evening promenade view evening industry bridge taken from the promenade overlooking the River Nile when using this city as a base for visiting the sites of Bani Hasan and Amarna. There was a pleasant walk along the promenade and it was also fascinating for the huge flocks of small birds that flew in to their roosting trees as evening closed in. We stayed in the Mercure Hotel Nefertiti, an aging hotel which had seen better days and it overlooked the newer chalet type complex called Hotel Aten.

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Feughside Corsedardar hill Aberdeernshire Dardanus Scots King broken marker burial is on a popular drive between Finzean and Aboyne following the B976 westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. The broken stone partly repaired with iron bands and cement after workmen broke it is supposed to stand in its original position and across from the modern War Memorial; nearby is a Millennium standing stone. The broken stone is claimed to have marked the place nearby where an early Scottish Pictish King Dardanus was killed circa AD75, according to Hector Boece’s History of the Scots 1527, because of his cruelty and universal dislike. This whole legend is beyond determining as fact. Slightly south west downhill of this and in the forest is a Long Cairn possibly dating to c.4000BC. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day.

Craigievar Castle tower house gate wall framed spring sun blue sky photograph of this property situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round.
Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.

Morven summer Groddie ruined cottage cement art pillars Logie Coldstone Deeside Scotland farmland rural taken from a single track road leaving the Tarland to A97 Logie Coldstone road signed to Groddie just after the Raebush turning before entering Logie Coldstone. This ruined cottage on the Dinnet estate is what little is left of a South Milton Cottage which was uniquely adorned with arty cement Grecian pillars with spiralling vine and leaves the workmanship of a previous eccentric tenant Sandy Robb and which I featured in my book Grampian published by Alan Sutton Publishing in their series Photographer's Britain in 1993.
