Banff Public Gardens fgh5020jhp Banff Scottish autumn municipal garden roses red flowers border tower Aberdeenshire near the Banff town centre close to the football stadium accessed from the main road which crosses the River Deveron over a beautiful seven arched bridge from the east. Banff is a town with a history dating back to the 12th century and was granted a charter by Robert the Bruce in the 14th Century. Once a thriving herring fishing port it is now a quiet town catering more to tourism with an excellent golf course at Duff House and has several sandy beaches. It is reckoned to be one of the driest and sunniest locations is Scotland. SEPP have carried out excavations of the site finding considerable evidence of the early palace. The current house dates from around 1566 after it was acquired by the Leslies of Balquhain although from a small tower originally it has expanded to the present façade in 1818. The carved panel above the main entrance is attributed to Count Patrick Leslie around 1690. Although it is accessible to view it is in a dangerous state of disrepair and is fenced off from public access. Later sold in 1728 to Robert Gordon and abandoned in 1769 in favour of a new Esslemont House built nearby. In a very ruined state and best viewed from the A920 just south of Ellon. Ruins in the photograph are from a 16th century castellated round tower of a large mansion house. Area to NW of these ruins was excavated in 1938 by Douglas Simpson and substantial evidence of a large and strong L shaped tower house with pink dressed granite foundations and is considered to be the remains of original castle.
