Aurora over Scotland (19 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

In hindsight this was to be one of the last major storms I witnessed on Deeside to date, 2018 and it continued all evening with a sequence of later photos taken over the Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle near Tarland from 22.00 hrs until after midnight. I had to leave Crooktree at 18.30 to teach at Aboyne where my photography students got dragged out to witness the continuing display. This digital photo was taken at 18.15.02hrsUT for 15secs and these cf137 digital photos were taken at 800ISO, possibly realising with this new card that the previous 100ISO was far to low. The 19 photos in this cf137 sequence were taken in the space of 15 mins as photos were being taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film photos started at around 17.40hrsUT. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 15.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. In hindsight this was to be one of the last major storms I witnessed on Deeside to date, 2018 and it continued all evening with a sequence of later photos taken over the Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle near Tarland from 22.00 hrs until after midnight. I had to leave Crooktree at 18.30 to teach at Aboyne where my photography students got dragged out to witness the continuing display. This digital photo was taken at 18.06.10hrsUT for 12secs and these cf137 digital photos were taken at 800ISO, possibly realising with this new card that the previous 100ISO was far to low. The 19 photos in this cf137 sequence were taken in the space of 15 mins as photos were being taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film photos started at around 17.40hrsUT. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 15.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. Tanis Granite Amun Discards EG077230JHP Tanis Ramses Temple Amun Carved Block Column Obelisk Ancient Egyptian City Delta Northern Egypt once thought to be the capital created by Ramses but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. A rough whinstone pillar with three finely incised prehistoric Pictish symbols of double disc and Z-rod, coiled serpent and simple mirror. It is apparently in its original position; near a burial and in view of the nearby hill fort of Dunnideer. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Entry into the walled garden is at the west side and the main path into the gardens is through the white borders and onto the path down the June Borders to the bottom of the walled garden where there is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border, the summer jewel resplendent with many colourful plants, with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Topiary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden. This photo was taken in the days of transparency film before digital was even a serious contender for recording these properties for the publishing market. Little has changed since this photo was taken except the distant rhododendrons which used to border the path coming down to the castle. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault. This photograph was taken in January 1986 and is scanned off a 645 transparency and was used as a Stirling Gallery postcard which is still being used and has sold over 200,000 cards. As a private property these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. Please contact their Edinburgh Head Office at Wemyss House, 28 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, EH2 4ET. This is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 15 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. This building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.
