One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. We were dropped here before entering the station and boarding the main Aswan to Cairo train for a visit to the Minya area. One aspect of the traffic management that I thoroughly approved were the traffic lights at junctions with a clock showing how soon to the change of lights. Obviously a programme without some pain and opposition especially from locals who have lived in the area and over the tombs for generations but part of the necessary management and control of these irreplaceable ancient sites and the artefacts contained therein. The Hotel I understand from the owner is destined to stay - a pleasant stop for refreshment after the heat of walking to several tombs. Parts of the previous setting for the house have gone such as the lovely pool from which the sculpture has been kept although greatly lacking in its previous style. The new buildings surrounding this Square offer interesting windows on the College and the Town House. At the time of taking this photo construction work is still ongoing especially in the front of Marischal College pedestrian area. The pool in the forground is dranined for cleaning but is usually full thoughout most of the year. Currently to the right of this view was the huge modern edifice of St Nicolas House, the council offices but they are now in the process of being demolished and one hope that a more fitting central area facing the majestic Marischal College will be created. Opposite the restaurant is the road to Auchenblae passing St Palladius Church and Drumtochty Castle in Glen Drumtochty which has interesting Forest Enterprise walks through mixed mature woodland and after leaving the forest the road enters Strath Finella passing this delightful loch near Glensaugh, used for fishing and often visited by ducks and swans. In the foreground is the Black Burn of Arnbarrow and to the right is a very steep small section of road at the start of the climb up to the Cairn O’Mount which has memories for me as a child having to exit my father’s old Rover car along with my mother and relatives as it could not make it up that first little climb. Delgatie Castle TO18826JHP Delgatie Scottish Castle Entrance Approach Photograph Turriff Public Exhibits Cafe dates from the 11th Century and was built by the Earls of Buchan, situated about two miles east of Turriff in Buchan, Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland. Taken from them in 1314 by the Hays of Delgatie after the Battle of Bannockburn it was rebuilt around 1570. A major feature is the turnpike staircase with the widest span in Scotland. It has many historical artefacts and works of art and colourful painted ceilings dating to the mid 1590’s.
