The bow of the RA11, an Eastmar operated cruiseboat lifted up to allow it to tuck in closer in the restricted space. Aswan Nubian Museum Bowls EG052937JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum bowls with hunting scenes, wild animals and hunters from the 6th Dysnasty and found at Qubbet el Hawa on display in this modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Faience Bowl EG012620JHP Egypt Cairo Museum Exhibit pottery faience bowl painted patterns in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Giza Solar Boat EG076658JHP Solar Boat Museum Giza Hull Oars Cabin Construction Visitors Inside is housed in an air-conditioned custom built building on the south face of the Great Pyramid of the Pharaoh Khufu over the boatpit in which this reassembled kit sailing boat from around 2500BC was discovered in the 1950’s. During construction analysis of the mud found on the wood sections suggests it sailed on the River Nile; the sections are tied together and it measures 43 metres long. Karnak South Wall EG0214068jhp Outer Wall Reliefs Karnak Temple South Ramesses Chariots bow arrow carving a site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. The most famous and awesome part of The Great Temple of Amun is the hypostyle hall with it huge columns, the central ones reaching 23m high. Originally erected by Seti 1 and was completed by his son Ramses 11 and although today greatly lacking in perfection is still overwhelming in its scale. This photo is taken from the outside of the hall on the southern side of the Temple where most of the inscriptions are related to Ramesses 11 and his various military campaigns in Palestine, charging fortresses, cities, binding captives and the hall is viewed from his gate on this side. These photos are taken in dying evening light after a sandstorm so rather flat and golden subdued light but still gives sufficient shadow outline on the sunken carvings. In both cases the approach is by motorboat being located on an island which is impressive with the pylon facing the landing berth and a large flight of steps. On the left is a small Roman kiosk called Qertassi dedicated to the Goddess Hathor and at the rear of the main temple is a small temple of Beit el-Wali from Ramasses 11 period carved out of a rock face although again relocated from near the original site of Kalabsha, some 40 km upstream on the banks of the original River Nile. All these three sites would have been flooded following the creation of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960’s. In this first visit in 2000, the arrival was from the Nile cruiseboat and they anchored along the rocky shore rather than the main stepped landing. Abu Ghurab Alabaster Bowl EG02AA11jhp Egypt Abu Ghurob Sun Temple Niuserre alabaster bowl draining hole isolated location south of Giza, about 25km from Cairo and situated on the desert escarpment after travelling through rural roads and walking in agricultural land and then the sand. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Captured by accident returning from dropping friends off at Aberdeen Train Station and spotted the bright sunshine and showers, always a goof oemn for rainbows. The shapes, size and often awesome sense of power of clouds and often couple with rain storms and rainbows make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible and it also appears in the images are short lines as it falls catching the sunlight although in these photos not a problem. Quoich Punch Bowl UP747517jhp Quoich Punch Bowl river rocks gorge Deeside Glen Aberdeenshire Scottish pic is located near the Linn of Dee another even more spectacular gorge west of Braemar into Glen Dee which is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl. From the Linn it is a slightly longer drive taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge and starting point for walks to Beinn A’Bhuird.
