Aurora over Scotland (11 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Urban Aurora au74015jhp Scotland Aurora display rays folding arc waning Deeside rooftops shed Aberdeenshire taken over Banchory itself and was active between 1.30 and 2am on the 11th April, 1990. This display was an hour or so after an earlier display which I photographed at The Neuk between 10.40 and 11.30pm on the 10th. This display developed from pulsating patches of light which I noticed from my house on Station Road next to the East Church Manse around 1 to 1.15am BST and which developed into a full blown arc with very strong rays. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left but here creates the curtain like effect with the arc folding to create a horseshoe shape. In the photos the blue colour is of lower level nitrogen gas excitation and with a hint of purple towards the end of the display as against the more common occurrence of red and green oxygen gas. Some of the colour is muted as there was a full moon, the light of which is evident in the brightness of the houses as well as the colour from tungsten lamps from street lights. Of humorous interest is the appearance on bathroom lights while I was photographing in two adjacent houses and neither of the occupants knew a display was underway when I enquired afterwards. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. On either side of the court are specialist chambers dedicated to specific Gods - this one to the north also attracts wind blown plastic bags. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. Cothiemuir Wood bnm3622jhp Scotland Cothiemuir Wood wind blown beech new growth leaves forest Aberdeenshire and now the focus for a nearby natural burial site with a spiritual connection going back to Bronze Age ancient Recumbent Stone Circle with altar stone, flankers and some outer monoliths is found deep in the forest off the Keig to Monymusk Road via My Lord’s Throat which runs along the southern side of Bennachie. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. Road to Glenshee 845JHP Snow Winter Glenshee Road Wind Blown Blizzard Aberdeenshire Freezing Dramatic taken near the Clunie Burn to the south of the Deeside village of Braemar on the road to Perth where the major ski resort of Cairnwell is at the highest point crossing in North East Scotland famous for the old hairpin bend called the Devil's Elbow which sadly no longer extists. This gives a good illustration of one reason why the road to the ski resort is often closed where strong winds can create large snow drifts which make ploughing the road almost a fulltime occupation.
