Edfu Exhibit Carvings EG052246JHP Edfu Temple Egypt Open Air Museum Exhibits Bird Perched Carving part of the modern approach to this ancient monument located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Tut Anubis Exhibit EG01265JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit Anubis statue display prone God Dog black gold in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. The figure in the foreground could be Queen Hatshepsut as the cartouche above has ripple of water and bit of the feather that appear in her Named cartouche. She is presenting Goddess Maat to Amun [not in frame] led by the Goddess Mut below. Not a very expert interpretation so do not take as gospel. Karnak Hatshepsut Obelisk EG074942jhp Ancient Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut Granite Obelisk Karnak Temple Transverse Hall is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view of Queen Hatshepsut's Obelisk, one of two remaining standing obelisks, is from between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The obelisk of red Aswan granite is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. The figure in the foreground could also be Queen Hatshepsut as the cartouche above has ripple of water and bit of the feather that appear in her Named cartouche. Kalabsha Exhibit EG9615711jhp Kalabsha Temple Nasser relocated Egyptian outdoor exhibits carvings pre-history elephant Roman Merwel Mandulis approach water High Dam is visited either privately from Aswan or part of a Lake Nasser cruise. In both cases the approach is by motorboat being located on an island which is impressive with the pylon facing the landing berth and a large flight of steps. On the left is a small Roman kiosk called Qertassi dedicated to the Goddess Hathor and at the rear of the main temple is a small temple from Ramasses 11 period carved out of a rock face although again relocated from near the original site of Kalabsha, some 40 km upstream on the banks of the original River Nile. All these three sites would have been flooded following the creation of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960’s. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum.
